About This Cause
BEHT stands for Bhagvatinandji Education and Health Trust, and is a UK registered charity working in Gujarat, India. Our aim is to improve the quality of life in a rural area that is rife with poverty and its associated social issues. We believe that we can do this sustainably through the provision of education, health and other relief to those who are most in need of it. Our projects aim to follow through on our core objectives of supporting those that may be in need of a helping hand in life. They span across education, health, elderly, animals, environment, and disaster relief, and are located across Gujarat. We look at finding holistic approaches to supporting communities of people. As the projects grow in size and number we hope that they have an increasingly wider reach, with the eventual goal of uplifting whole regions out of poverty and enabling them to move forward independently. Education BEHT with its Indian partner, BET, has established 4 educational centres of excellence in the last twenty years, as well as the holistic Anand Dhara project. These are in line with our core objectives for education: To provide educational opportunities to orphaned children or children from one parent families. To provide educational opportunities for boys and girls from the rural area at an affordable cost. To develop young people who can become leaders of tomorrow and who have a positive attitude to life i.e. they are disciplined, hard working and have good moral values. To develop individuals who work for the whole of humanity. To provide education for the 21st century with appropriate use of computers and other new technology. To establish centres of excellence in education which can be used as resource centres by other local schools and teachers. Health Everyone aspires for good health. It is easier to maintain good health and living standards if you have financial resources and live in an urban area. Where there is poverty, there are also many health issues like obesity, diabetes, malnutrition, alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse etc. And it is even more challenging when you live in rural areas where the nearest medical facilities are far away in the main cities. Jay Ambe Hospital As one of the objectives of BEHT is to provide relief to the poor, the handicapped, the sick and the aged, it has helped to build a 172 bed multi speciality Jay Ambe hospital in Chaparda where all treatments are given free of charge funded mainly by overseas donors. Patients only pay for the medicine which is highly subsidised by the Government. Since starting in 2012, the hospital is currently treating on average about 750 patients a day. Thousands of lives have been cured and saved by this initiative. Jay Ambe Hospital provides the following services: General Surgery Intensive care unit (ICU) Paediatrics 24 Hour Accident & Emergency Ophthalmology Dentistry Gynaecology Maternity Orthopaedics Physiotherapy 24-hour Pharmacy 24-hour Ambulance service Laboratory X-Ray Department Sonography There are about 120 staff members including 40 nurses, 8 residents and 5 visiting doctors / surgeons, 8 medical officers, 6 laboratory workers, 5 pharmacists and 1 physiotherapist. The staff is looked after with accommodation provided for them as well as good schooling for their children. Welfare of Elderly As part of BEHT’s objective to provide relief to the poor, the handicapped, the sick and the aged, it has set up four elderly care homes. These are primarily for those elderly living on their own in the villages who have become sick or injured and have no one else who could look after them. Homes are in the following places: Radhaba Sanyas Ashram in Mendarda caring for about 50 senior citizens. Kailash Dham Ashram in Gandhinagar caring for 100 senior citizens. Prayag Ashram in Gupt Prayag caring for 50 senior citizens. Chaparda Vrudh Ashram in Chaparda caring for 100 senior citizens. In the homes, senior citizens can live comfortably and with dignity in their last stage of life. Each home has its own dairy farm and the surrounding areas have been developed with lots of fruit trees, flowers and plants into a beautiful, green pleasant places where elders can live happily. The residents receive three home cooked hot meals a day with tea and snacks in between, and all their medication and personal care is taken care of. These homes are free of charge for the residents and are supported by local and overseas donors. Animals & Environment Animals, birds, and all other living creatures are silently cohabiting on this planet and every living being has an equal right to live and prosper – a thinking which is now accepted by most people. BEHT upholds these values and promotes it through its projects. In each of BEHT’s education centres, there is a dairy farm and the milk produced is fed to the children free of charge. Cows have the ability to feed, provide and support humanity in so many ways hence it has been revered as sacred, to be protected and preserved in India. Essentially this is a depiction of the necessity to preserve what helps you support yourselves. All the Gaushalas have been developed with these principles and the shepherds and Gaushala caretakers have been provided with quarters in the Gaushala itself with all the amenities to support them. All the cows are treated with great love and care. In addition, our Anand Dhara project which aims to develop whole villages holistically is also helping to improve farming and raise awareness of environmental issues.
