About This Cause
Back Up is a national charity that provides services and support for anybody affected by a spinal cord injury (SCI). Every 8 hours someone in the UK will be told they will never walk again as a result of a spinal cord injury. It can affect anybody at anytime. It is usually sudden and unexpected, often caused by something as simple as a car accident or a fall. We understand that a spinal cord injury can be devastating, but we believe it shouldn't prevent anybody getting the most out of life. Founded 30 years ago, Back Up has developed and evolved, over the years, to offer the right support to anybody with a spinal cord injury, including their family members - regardless of their age and level of injury. Our award-winning services currently include mentoring, wheelchair skills training and activity courses. We also provide support in getting back to work or school after an injury. All of our services are designed to inspire confidence and independence, and provide a supportive network of people who understand their situation. We are the only UK Charity with a dedicated under 18s service for children with an SCI offering courses, mentoring and support getting back to school. In 2015/16, we reached 800 new people with spinal cord injury – equivalent to about 80% of people injured. We now support more young people, family members and people over 50 than ever before and we are striving to reach everyone who needs us.
