Mission Statement
“To provide a place where individuals and groups can access services and opportunities which will enhance their life chances and wellbeing. In turn, this will lead to a general uplift in the quality of life in our community”.
About This Cause
Action Station is a small local charity which was originally established by people in the community, including community groups and local churches in response to pit and shipyard closures with the primary aim of supporting the most disadvantaged residents of West Harton and the surrounding areas. Our catchment area is recognised as an area of multiple deprivation (top 18% England coupled with 12.9% workless claimants and 34% of people having no qualifications) and the area suffers from one of the highest unemployment rates in England. It is classified as amongst the most deprived neighbourhoods in the county where residents face significant social disadvantage, who are also the worst placed to deal with the impact of crisis, especially the cost of living. We primarily support vulnerable and disadvantaged local people to address their social isolation and improve their overall health, well-being and quality of life through a broad range of services. We also support those who need help to improve their confidence, skills and employability or signpost those who need help to manage a range of issues including dealing with debt, dealing with substance abuse etc. It is a busy, well-established facility (with an annual footfall of 3000 last year excluding foodbank which peaked at 1000 parcels per week during pandemic and still has a 360% since pre-pandemic) and we are open daily Monday to Friday as well as providing some evening sessions. The centre is the only local provision offering services in the area. We provide: - Community Café - Training rooms and IT suite - Meeting rooms used by a broad range of partner organisations - Office accommodation rented to aligned organisations - Library services and provision. This enables us to offer core services.
