Mission Statement

Mayhew works to promote animal welfare by delivering a broad range of community-based veterinary, care and education services in the UK and overseas. We want to share our point of view to inform and change behaviours, and improve animal welfare. We take a realistic view of the - often difficult - situations that pet owners face, and look for ways to reduce the number of animals in need through pro-active initiatives and preventative care. We know that a major part of our work is in understanding the links between social issues and animal welfare. We do not judge. We listen. We value people too.

About This Cause

More than just a rescue and rehoming centre, Mayhew provides a range of animal welfare initiatives to help dogs, cats and communities in the UK and internationally. We strongly believe that education is key to help stem the number of unwanted, neglected and abused animals coming into rescue centres such as ours. We have a team of Animal Welfare Officers who work out in the community to help pets and their owners in society who are vulnerable, elderly and sick or facing a personal crisis, including working with London’s homeless. We pride ourselves on being approachable and non-judgemental and do everything we can to give practical help to keep pets with their owners. Preserving the special bond between animal and human is always at the heart of everything we do. Mayhew delivers an Animal Assisted Intervention Programme called TheraPaws, where volunteers take their behaviourally assessed dogs into hospitals, mental health centres, SEN schools, care home and hospices. The visits are designed to promote physical and emotional well being and to improve the quality of life for those interacting with the dog. Our on-site Community Vet Clinic provides free and low cost neutering and preventative vet care for the public including microchipping, vaccinations, and flea and worm treatments. We also neuter and health-check London’s feral cats, and provide emergency and rehabilitative vet care to Mayhew cats and dogs. We have an international arm, with two branch offices – Mayhew Afghanistan and Mayhew Georgia working to help humanely address the free-roaming populations of dogs and cats through delivering mass canine rabies vaccination and Trap Vaccinate Neuter and Return programmes with both government and grassroots support. Mayhew provides training for veterinary personnel from overseas who are genuinely interested in improving animal welfare in their country. We work with like-minded vets to build in-country sustainable programmes for the development of improved animal health and welfare in their local communities.
