About This Cause
The Connection at St Martin’s is a registered homelessness charity in central London, located next to Trafalgar Square, which helps thousands of homeless people every year to move away from, and stay off the streets of London. We are much more than a soup kitchen and provide a range of specialist services, all under one roof, which help people address their homelessness, and make the necessary steps away from the streets so they can re-enter society and live ‘normally’ again. We help more street homeless people than any other service in the UK. This is because central London attracts thousands of people, who wish to start their lives over, or believe there are more opportunities available to them here. If these do not materialise, people find themselves vulnerable to homelessness. We provide a range of specialist services, which help people cope with the physical and psychological crisis of being homeless, while getting to the root cause of why someone ended up on the streets. Our holistic approach supports people to rebuild their lives so they have viable alternatives to rough sleeping. The Connection works with people from across the UK and internationally who are sleeping rough in Westminster. We also help people who are at risk of homelessness and those living in insecure housing. The service is inclusive and accessible to every age group, nationality and religion. We work with a variety of people including: • Single homeless people sleeping rough and those in temporary or insecure accommodation • Homeless people who have mental health issues and or drug/alcohol misuse problems • Entrenched rough sleepers with a long history of sleeping on the streets • Unemployed people who want to develop their skills or find a job • Minority groups within the homeless population, including women, young people, elderly homeless people and refugees • Ex-service men and women who find the transition to civilian life difficult • Homeless ex-offenders or those with a repeated pattern of offending Our services encompass: - Street Outreach - Advice services, including mental health support - Housing advice and referrals - Education, employment & training services - Night Centre crisis accommodation, and a 12-bed supported housing scheme - Day Centre services, including canteen, showers, laundry and GP - Social Inclusion activities, including art, football, digital inclusion and much more. Our street team, Westminster Contact & Assessment Service, is the largest in the UK and works around the clock to help thousands of rough sleepers in central London find viable alternatives to rough sleeping. The team goes out every day of the year, either early in the morning or late at night, checking on people’s welfare, and encouraging them to access relevant services for further support. The time it takes for someone to move away from the street varies considerably, and depends on the person’s situation and their support needs. If someone is new to the streets, this process can be relatively quick, but if someone has more complex mental health or substance misuse problems it can take longer for a relationship of trust to be established, and for the person to start engaging with us. The team works in partnership with lots of specialist services including other homelessness organisations, mental health professionals, representatives from migrant communities, the police and social services, to ensure people receive the support they need.
