About This Cause
The society has a board of trustees, who meet once a month to discuss with the general manager what has been happening both within and outside the society. All the trustees are volunteers and, in total, the society has in excess of 80 volunteers across all our activities and they provide in excess of 350 hours support per week. There are also paid staff within the society, four of whom are full time, six part time and over thirty sessional staff, who support the various clubs and groups each week. As with the majority of charities, we have two shops that sell donated clothes, books and other goods to help raise some of the funds we need to keep the society going. We also have our own coffee shop, The Novel Coffee Shop, which sells coffees, teas, soft drinks, cakes and light lunches as well as doubling as our charity bookshop too while at the same time providing in excess of 20 work placement opportunities for our students throughout the week that promotes the benefits of employing the learning disabled to all local businesses and the wider community. Our service provision for the learning disabled supports around 800/year and there are numerous projects, clubs and groups that are currently running, offering a wide variety to the learning disabled. o Advocacy Service – two full time advocates are available to help support the needs of the learning disabled to ensure their voice is heard when dealing with everyday issues. o Family Support Worker – two part time family support workers who provide information and support to the families of the learning disabled e.g. accessing services, benefits information. o Showstoppers – our community based drama and performance project, for adults with learning disabilities, encouraging learning through the arts. o SMASH – a weekly sports club for people with learning disabilities aged 13 years and above. o M.O.D.S – a weekly drama group for adults with learning disabilities. o Family Play & Respite – a weekly sports and social club for children aged 5 to 16 years with learning disabilities. o 16+ Club – a weekly social club for young people with learning disabilities aged 16 to 25. o Friendship Group – a weekly social club for adults with learning disabilities who had to leave one of the two main day service centres in our area. o Compatibles – friendship/relationship opportunities for people with learning disabilities. o Yoga - providing both mat and chair based exercises that are held in our coffeeshop, Leigh community centre as well as at other organisations’ venues where they have large groups interested in the project.
