Mission Statement
Children who have secure, nurturing homes do better at school - School Home Support ensures children who live in poverty thrive and achieve in school. Our specialist support engages parents in their children’s’ learning, provides practical support to families; improving children's attendance at school and their educational attainment.
About This Cause
Children from poor families, or with complex and stressful home lives often struggle to regularly attend school. All too often they lag behind their peers in terms of attainment, with negative consequences for themselves and society. We know that a good education is critical to children and young people leading successful adult lives. School-Home Support tackles the very real link between poverty and poor education by getting children consistently attending school and ready to learn. Our work means children living in poverty improve their attendance and make progress at school. How we do this - We employ committed, skilled and inspirational people - they are specialist practitioners who work intensively with families, schools and children. Their work reaches beyond the classroom to understand and tackle the often complex issues affecting each individual child and family such as poverty, domestic violence or overcrowded housing. The difference we make - Our work breaks the long term cycles of deprivation that so often prevents children and young people succeeding in life - and we know it works. An independent study in 2011 concluded that every £1 spent on School-Home Support can save £11 by reducing the future financial costs of crime, unemployment and social care. Our plans are to sustain and grow our practitioner service and engage a wider range of schools. As much as we'd love to have a School-Home Support practitioner in every school that needs one, we know this is unrealistic. Membership to School-Home Support also gives schools access to our specialist support, advice and training, upskilling educators to address issues like truancy, poor behaviour and lack of attainment. Last year we supported over 9,000 vulnerable children and families, with some amazing results - we'd love your help to enable us to reach more!.
