Mission Statement

The Citizens Foundation (UK) is a UK registered charity raising funds and awareness for The Citizens Foundation (TCF): a leading educational charity serving disadvantaged communities in Pakistan. TCF's mission is to make quality education accessible to all children in Pakistan and empower them to become confident, capable individuals who have the drive to steer themselves and their families out of poverty.

About This Cause

The Citizens Foundation (TCF) is a school system for out-of-school children in Pakistan. With 2,033 schools, The Economist has called TCF "perhaps the largest network of independently run schools in the world." 301,000 children from the most marginalised and vulnerable communities in Pakistan are currently enrolled in TCF schools. 48% of these are girls. TCF hires only women as teachers and principals and has become the largest employer of women in the country. TCF's curriculum is built on values of diversity, tolerance, equality and critical thinking. Textbooks depict progressive gender norms, such as girls playing cricket and becoming scientists and men doing housework. The UN Girls Education Initiative (UNGEI) has published a case study about TCF entitled, "Best Practices in Girls' Enrolment in Pakistan." Over 500 female alumni have become TCF teachers. Other TCF Alumni include a World Bank employee, a paediatric neurologist and a taekwondo gold medallist who has trained 2,000 girls in self-defense - all children of factory workers. TCF's model and its impact has been recognised globally. Notable accolades include the 2017 UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy, 2015 Schwab Social Entrepreneur of the Year, 2014 Ramon Magsaysay Award, 2013 Skoll Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs and the 2011 Clinton Global Initiative.
