Mission Statement

We are dedicated to making Armenian culture and history a living experience through innovative programmes, educational resources, workshops, lectures, exhibits and performances.

About This Cause

The Armenian Institute creates a space to meet and discuss, be entertained by world-class artists, listen to authors, academics, journalists speak about their latest work. We initiate and organise and are stimulated and inspired by masterclasses, interactive workshops, films, exhibitions and performances. Our language classes in East and West variants of Armenian draw an average of 55 students annually and we also produce important publications such as the children’s book, Who Are the Armenians? and most recently, the re-publication of Leon Surmelian’s I Ask You, Ladies and Gentlemen. We publish a magazine, Zanazan and run a series of podcasts, Zanazan sounds. A rich library and archival collection is at the heart of the Armenian Institute and visitors are encouraged to use these resources to learn about the past, about Armenian culture and heritage and also to build on these to create new kinds of resources for our contemporary world. Our librarian is available to point visitors towards works that will interest them and advise on our array of resources. Within the work of AI, particular attention is paid to contemporary Diasporan life and the development of links with Armenia and other communities. Our emphasis on exploring culture, history and the world around us makes AI a magnet for Armenians and non-Armenians alike seeking to learn more and enjoy the company of others who share these interests. With the start of our generous grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, AI is developing a series of events exploring 4 themes: Literary Heritage; Migration; Displacement and Refugees; Exploring Gender Identities; Neighbours – Historical and Contemporary. The NLHF grant also enables a programme of events and workshops called Culture Hub which will explore different forms of expression, communication and learning about heritage together. Through all its work, the Armenian Institute seeks to build bridges with others and promotes interaction, collaboration and networking among ethnic and cultural groups in Britain for the enrichment of individuals and communities.
