Mission Statement

The objective of the charity is the advancement of the Christian faith and its vision statement is: 'To be an international family of 1000 worshippers, who love God above all else, enthusiastically tell others about Jesus and grow in maturity in Christ.’ The following four key development areas have been identified: 1) Equipping and developing leaders. 2) Prayer. 3) Making disciples of all nations. 4) On mission together in Harrow. We aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for all people in the area to learn and benefit from the teachings of the Bible and the Christian message. With this in mind we strive to be a church which is international in outlook and inclusive of people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, thus reflecting the diverse makeup of the population of Harrow.

About This Cause

Activities include the following: 1) Regular meetings for worship, teaching and prayer. 2) International Day - Over the last 6 years we have sought to further develop our calling to be a church which is international in outlook and inclusive of people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. In November 2013 and 2014 we celebrated progress made by holding an ‘International Day’ at Whitmore High School. The events consist of a time of worship and praise reflecting music and dance from different nations. There is also a focus during the meeting on particular nations represented by some of the church membership. After the meeting everyone are invited back to Brigade House for lunch which reflects the national background of some of our members. 3) Special Guest Services - Throughout the year we arrange guest events at different times of the year, such as Christmas and Easter services. 4) Connect Events & Regular Community Activities - We arrange a programme of social events throughout the year with the aim of helping our members to become more integrated and thus give opportunities for the development of friendships within the church. We advertised these within the church as ‘Connect Events’ and most were open for guests to be invited. Alongside these one-off events we run weekly 5 a-side football games throughout most of the year. These are available for teenagers and all ages above. In September 2013 we commenced a new ‘Singles Ministry’ under the leadership of one of our Elders. The ministry is designed to encourage those in their late 20s and older who are either unmarried, divorced or widowed and provide opportunities for fellowship and support where needed. The meetings are not only available to members of King’s Church Harrow but are also advertised in other neighbouring churches. In addition to the above events we are establishing some activities based at Brigade House which are open to the local community. In November 2013 we commenced ‘Dancefit’ a weekly Ladies Fitness Class. In February 2014 we commenced a Mum’s Morning, a weekly opportunity for mum’s and female carers with children 0-3 years to meet for coffee while children play together. All these activities are advertised by leaflets posted in the immediate locality and by personal invitation. 5) Children’s’ Work - Throughout most of the year we facilitate football sessions free of charge every Saturday morning which are open to both church and non-church boys and girls aged 5 to 10 years. These were supervised by one of our Elders, under the banner ‘Fun First Football’. In addition we run 1 week of football for the same age range over the summer school holidays based at Brigade Hall. 6) Young People & Students - This financial year we commenced a youth club for 10 to 15 year olds which meets at Brigade House for various indoor games. In conjunction with other churches in the Borough of Harrow we have continued to befriend foreign students studying at Westminster University in order to offer help in settling in to their new surroundings, pastoral support and also an opportunity, for those interested, of an introduction to the Christian faith. 7) King’s English - We conduct English courses which are run by members of the church to teach English to adults for whom English is not their first language. Throughout the year we provide two hour ESOL classes located at Brigade House. 8) Alpha Courses The Alpha Course is designed for those who are interested in finding out more about the Christian faith. We normally host two of these courses every year, based at Brigade House. Invitations are given to friends and relatives by members of the church. 9) Other Courses - We also periodically run other courses on life skills such as marriage and parenting. 10) Support for People with Mental Health Challenges Two years ago we came into contact with a small group of men who had varying degrees of mental health issues and were interested in learning more about the Christian faith. Although some came to one of our Alpha courses it was felt that these individuals would benefit from more regular contact and support. A weekly low key event was therefore started last year by one of our full time Elders, Cliff Nelson, with the support of other church members. There is an opportunity to chat and go through a Bible story over a cup of coffee at a local coffee house. The local mental health charity, MIND in Harrow, is aware and supportive of this work. Cliff Nelson received training as a faith visitor from the Harrow Mental Health Service at Northwick Park Hospital and became a faith visitor with an honorary contract with the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust. This role involves dropping into the mental health unit wards (Eastlake Ward and Fernley Ward) at Northwick Park Hospital on a monthly basis and giving time to listen, talk with, read to, and pray with any patients who would like to do so. It involves responding to individual patient requests for a Christian faith visit and also includes regular review meetings at least three times a year with Carol Harrison-Read, who oversees faith visits for the Harrow Mental Health Service. 11) Ministry to the Poor - We work in partnership with other churches in Harrow through a local charity we set up in the name of FirmFoundation. Together we organize and staff a winter night shelter which runs seven nights a week at the Welldon Centre in Central Harrow for the months of January to March. Our aim is to provide a warm and friendly environment, with safe dormitory style overnight accommodation over the winter months for up to ten male guests per night. We also provide a good quality, 2-course evening meal, breakfast and a packed lunch for our guests along with the availability of hot shower and washroom facilities. Our intention is not only to offer immediate overnight accommodation, but also to offer assistance to any guests wishing to access local services, such as the Benefit Office and mental health care, as well as helping them find long term accommodation. 12) Financial Support - As an expression of our commitment to being involved in world mission we give financial support to ‘New Ground’, a family of churches of which we relate to within 'NewFrontiers', in their various projects both in the UK and in other parts of the world particularly Europe. Provision has also been made within our finances to enable us to respond efficiently to immediate needs for mission or relief from disasters, in both the UK and overseas as well as individual hardship needs in Harrow. We continue to provide financial support as well as rent free office facilities at Brigade House to ‘FirmFoundation’ as it seeks to serve the homeless in Harrow. 13) Leadership - As part of our desire to train, equip and envision leaders in the church we have conducted regular leaders meetings. We have also encouraged and financially assisted a number of them to attend various conferences run by Newfrontiers and New Ground throughout the year as well as other events geared towards those in leadership in the local church. Also we have been fortunate in having Dave Holden, leader of ’New Ground’, come to meet with the Elders and the wider leadership team on a couple of occasions to encourage and support us in our leadership responsibilities.
