Mission Statement
ReachOut is a one-to-one mentoring charity that helps build character and improve academic attainment in disadvantaged young people.
About This Cause
ReachOut gives disadvantaged young people the individual support they need to achieve their potential and go on to lead good and happy lives. Young people are referred to us by schools because they are disengaged or underachieving. We help them to develop their character and improve their academic attainment through long-term one-to-one mentoring with positive, volunteer role models. Our mentees meet weekly with their ReachOut mentors at after-school projects that take place in our partner schools. The projects run from October to June, with approximately 30 sessions across that time (projects break for school holidays). There are up to sixteen young people from one year group on each project, each paired with a mentor. The activity is supervised by a ReachOut project leader who is responsible for managing each session, teacher liaison and leading group activities, creating a safe and supportive environment for both mentees and mentors. Since 2011, 69% of our mentees receiving free school meals achieved 5 A*-Cs at GCSE, compared to just 34% nationwide. Furthermore, more than 99% of our mentees are in education, training or employment 6 months after leaving Year 11, and 100% of teachers we work with say that our programmes have a positive effect on pupils’ personal development. We work closely with the school to understand the issues facing the young person and their current attainment and develop a clear set of impact goals for each of them. These are often focused on their academic attainment but also on their confidence and behaviour.
