Mission Statement

The Chiltern Centre for Disabled Children and Young People provides short break care to families across the Thames Valley who have a disabled child aged 6 to 25. We are in a great position to be able to support families from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

About This Cause

The Chiltern Centre provides day, overnight and weekend care for children and young people with physical disability and / or learning difficulties. The centre supports families enabling them to have much needed break from the 24/7 care they provide. Mission statement "To help children and young people with disabilities live life to the full while providing support to families in their vital role of caring” The Chiltern Centre has provided short break care for around 30 families from across South Oxfordshire/ Berkshire who have a child and/or young people with severe learning disabilities with associated communication and behavioural difficulties. Many have additional complex medical needs including: sensory impairments, mobility issues, epilepsy, complex feeding needs, continence and long term health issues including cerebral palsy. 80% of the children require at least 1:1 care, some 2:1 and some even 3:1. The physical and emotional demands of caring for a disabled child can be very challenging, often putting significant strain on family life. Our specialist short break services, helps reduce the pressures within the family and, in some cases cause family breakdown. Why is the work we do vital - FAMILY SUPPORT - We support the whole family. Our work is primarily about caring for the disabled child, but subsequently we are a direct support for the parents and at home carers, and also enable the families to spend much needed time with other siblings. - VULNERABLE -We facilities the development of life skills and appropriate behaviours with our older young people through ASDAN and Buddies youth groups (9/10 people with learning disability have been victim of hate crime and bullying) - LIFESTYLE – there are higher than average levels of obesity in the young people we see. Education and activity programmes address this. - POVERTY – there are exceptional costs of bringing up a child with a disability. Financial pressures impacts on carers’ stress and quality of life - STRESS AND IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORT – more than 70% of carers provide more than 15 hours per day of care. 99% live at home and only 1/13 children receive regular care from outside. Isolation, fear and exhaustion contribute to a feeling of being ‘trapped’ or reaching breaking point. Impact on siblings and marriages is fundamental. - EXPERTISE- diverse and complex needs of the families we support mean the centre must be staffed by well trained professionals. The Chiltern Centre provides nursing care. Nursing staff communicate with doctors, paediatricians, acute care services, community nurses, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists. Why we need support - Central grants are constantly being cut and the centre needs £200k from fundraising annually to stay open. - We are a local charity supporting local families with complex and needs. We often lose out to larger charities.
