Mission Statement
To transform the lives of children and young people in disadvantaged South African communities. We are dedicated to addressing the systemic challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequality by working directly with vulnerable youth and their families. Through our holistic Cradle-to-Career 360° model, we provide integrated programmes that promote lifelong development—encompassing quality education, health and wellness, and socio-economic empowerment from childhood to adulthood. Our approach not only equips children and young people with the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty but also fosters lasting change within entire communities. This mission, underpinned by over 30 years of dedicated service, is realised through sustainable and impactful initiatives that empower young people to become socially and economically empowered and self-reliant.
About This Cause
Afrika Tikkun works in South African townships where disease, poverty, unemployment, lack of education and lack of healthcare are common place and young people face endless barriers to positive development and lifestyles. Their neighbourhoods are rife with crime, drugs and gangsterism. Youth unemployment (ages 15 - 34) stands at 46.1%, 1 in 3 people are directly affected by HIV/AIDS, approximately 1 out of 7 mothers are teenagers, and 1.5 million children are orphans. Afrika Tikkun's Cradle-to-Career 360° approach reaches hundreds of vulnerable children and youth daily. Through our programming, we deliver age-appropriate interventions - spanning early childhood, after-school support, specialised skills training and job placement - while partnering with government, corporates and local stakeholders to foster sustainable, community-led transformation. Our following core programmes are aimed at creating a new generation of people that feel the pride and fulfilment that comes from being a productive citizen: Bambanani Programme (ages 1 - 6): Equips under-resourced Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres with a play-based, outcomes-driven curriculum and ongoing mentorship for principals and practitioners. In 2024, 227 children in each of our five centres benefitted from this support, achieving an average attendance rate of 76%. Through our outreach, we supported an additional 265 ECDs in 18 districts and provinces and 18,748 children were reached. By ensuring children meet critical developmental milestones, we prepare them to enter formal schooling with confidence. Ignite Programme (ages 7 - 18): An after-school programme that provides structured academic assistance, socio-emotional development and vital life skills from digital literacy to physical well-being. In 2024, Ignite reached 3,084 young people at our five centres, contributing to an impressive 94% matric pass rate. Head Start Programme (ages 19 - 35): Combines career guidance, bursaries, practical work-readiness training and sector- specific courses (such as ICT, agriculture, retail, and hospitality) to open pathways to sustainable employment. In 2024, Head Start trained 5,100 young people in work readiness, delivered specialised skills training to 2,858 young people and facilitated 3,016 job placements, internships and learnerships. Afrika Tikkun Alumni Network: Over 6,499 former Afrika Tikkun beneficiaries are given access to lifelong learning resources, peer support and entrepreneurial mentorship. In 2024 alone, 709 alumni became paid network members and 170 fledgling enterprises received direct support and upskilling. Standing as the foundation of all of our cradle-to-career model is our 360° Social Support Services (SSS) which ensures that children and young people have the nutrition, healthcare, psychosocial support, and protection they need to thrive. In 2024, we served over 2.1 million meals, distributed 3,119 food parcels and safeguarded 1,889 orphans and vulnerable children with psychosocial and healthcare interventions. At Afrika Tikkun UK, we work in close conjunction with Afrika Tikkun South Africa (the headquarters) to facilitate UK/Europe - based donations on behalf of Afrika Tikkun South Africa.
