Mission Statement
Bath Rugby Foundation empowers vulnerable children and young people in Bath and the surrounding area to succeed. Famed for its Roman baths, impressive Georgian architecture, Jane Austen - and of course its rugby club, behind the Georgian façade lies a different story. 8,154 children in B&NES are on the breadline. This is almost 20% of children, rising to 31% in Radstock and 35% in Twerton. Twerton West is in the top 10% most deprived areas in the UK. Whiteway is in the bottom 1% in the country in its provision of education and training for children & young people. 3,521 children receive Free School Meals. When they are not in school their nutrition suffers. B&NES is ranked 146 out of 150 LEA’s in the country with an attainment gap of 31% against a national average of 20%. This means at the end of primary, poorer pupils are already 9.5 months behind their more affluent peers stretching to 19.3 months by the end of secondary school. We don’t believe it is right that such inequality exists in our city. Bath Rugby Foundation exists to bridge the gap between the poorest and most affluent areas, and build a positive, supportive community in Bath and the surrounding area. We believe every child and every young person in Bath and North East Somerset deserves an equal opportunity and the same chance to succeed.
About This Cause
Bath Rugby Community Foundation (BRF) empowers vulnerable children and young people (CYP) in Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES). By working in schools, special schools, community centres, parks across B&NES, Wiltshire and Somerset and at our home at the Bath Rec, we support vulnerable children, by implementing social and physical wellbeing programmes and employability programmes to ensure those who have had a tough start are not defined by this. We have worked tirelessly in the areas of Employability, Inclusion and Education with tens of thousands of children over the last 19 years. Our participants leave with raised confidence, new life skills, and remain part of the Bath Rugby family. We have two main aims. 1). We aim to break down barriers which prevent SEND children and young people from being active, fit, independent and socialising, and to introduce them to a range of opportunities that challenge their mindset; raise aspirations and encourage them out of their comfort zone. It is a key intervention supporting the mental health and wellbeing of the participants as well as developing the skills required for independent living. During the 14 years we have been delivering Hi 5! Clubs, friendships have been formed which extend way beyond the weekly sessions. Hi5! has five clubs a week and has increased in numbers and we are seeing more and more social development in our participants, attending different areas, shops and café’s in the community, our participants have grown in the ability to complete daily tasks and conversations independently and safely be part of the wider community. 2). We run an Alternative Learning Hub (ALH) - an alternative education centre for vulnerable children and young people (CYP) aged from 14-19, or up to 25 with special educational needs (SEN). The ALH is split into two age groups. 14-16 and 16-19(25) offering full-time, term-time education and enrichment for CYP not in education, employment, or training (NEET). The ALH offers a second chance to CYP who often come from disadvantaged backgrounds and receive less emotional/practical support at home, resulting in them becoming disengaged with, or dropping out of education. Mainstream ‘one size fits all’ education system does not work for vulnerable CYP who are left behind, with low confidence, lack of qualifications and disengaged with education or gaining qualifications because of their experiences or perceived lack of ability. For these CYP, an alternative practical style of learning environment is needed.
