SCAN wishes to bring new life and hope to such children, by providing them with the very basic necessities of life to improve their chances of surviving childhood. We hope to help in shaping the life experiences of our children, thus building a good foundation for the future. Our vision for Africa We see a continent that identifies children as future leaders and help contribute towards necessary facilities that will bring hope and new life to children in need in Africa. Our Mission Alleviating children’s poverty in Africa due directly or indirectly to the effects of war, disease and disability, by providing or assisting in the provision of equipment, facilities and services as will address their needs. Organisational (Programme) Objectives and Services: • Relieve poverty amongst children in African Countries. • Up-skill target group through the provision of vocational skills training, training for employment, employment advice, information, assistance, counselling, advocacy, translating and representation services. • Provide Community Health, Housing, Social and Welfare assistance and other developmental assistance to children in need in Africa. • Provide equality of opportunity, with mutual respect and positive encouragement for children in need in Africa. • Provide education and educational facilities and resources for the development of the whole person, so that all children in need in Africa can realise their full potential. Our Current Strategic Goals • To provide the right environment for students and other participants (individuals, businesses, churches, groups, etc) in the U.K. to directly contribute towards charities, and to enable them to help address the problems of targeted children in Africa. • To provide hands-on project development and implementation experience to participants (schools, churches, businesses, individuals, etc) through the ‘Schools Awareness Programme’. • To raise funds for the procurement and distribution of necessary project equipment e.g. pump heads for water supply, computers for schools, laboratory equipment, books, teachers, clothing, etc., which are difficult to source locally. • To up-skill our target group in Africa through the provision of training for employment through our ‘Skills for Life Programme’. • To establish educational sponsorship for children in need in Africa. Operational Values: We believe that: • Children should be loved and cared for and that this will reflect in their later life especially as parents and leaders of tomorrow. • Children should be provided with adequate basic life enhancing facilities and resources such as health care, education and the basic necessities of clean water, food, clothing and shelter, irrespective of their race, gender, religion, culture or the environment they are born into so as to better prepare them for their future role and responsibilities as responsible adults in society. • Every child has innate qualities, talents and potentials but due to their being victims of unfortunate circumstances, they cannot utilise their potential. We aim to contribute towards nurturing these qualities. • Children matter and we acknowledge that every individual or groups who share in our aims & activities help to positively influence the life and purpose of children in Africa. • In terms of rights, children with disabilities are no different from able bodied children. Facilities and resources should be provided so that they can live as near normal lives as possible. • Children growing up as unloved and unwanted youngsters and who are denied that right to be loved and wanted may grow to become bitter and develop into dysfunctional adults through no fault of their own, contributing towards the cycle of deprivation in their children. Our Development Opportunities • To provide facilities and resources so that children can have a lifeline access to good primary, secondary and tertiary education in their respective communities and countries and at the same time spread the Good News of God's Love for human kind. • To help encourage children with disabilities so that they can maintain their independence and self-respect. This will involve providing an environment characterised by care, guidance and support facilities within which these children are helped to grow as individuals. • To encourage children to develop their potential, by SCAN contributing to their upbringing and helping to mould their lives. This will be done through training and development and educational programmes in the respective countries. • To ensure that our services and facilities are accessible to every child in Africa regardless of their location, race, gender religion, or culture. This is further discussed in the Equal Opportunity Policy of the organisation. • To provide and encourage the interaction and participation of children in their various African countries. This will be in the form of sporting activities, exhibitions and exchange programmes. • To be aware of the expectations and perceptions of children and to respond to them. We do recognise and value each child, and acknowledge the dignity and uniqueness of every child. • To work carefully within the organisation and with private individuals and other charities of similar objectives so as to provide the best blend of services to those who need them most. SCAN currently runs four programmes: • Schools Awareness Programme – Exposing severely deprived schools to new appropriate technology and teaching methods relevant in their environment. • Schools Exchange Programme – To encourage cross-cultural diversification through hands on interaction by student exchange, for example. • Skills for Life (Skills Development Programme) – To paraphrase an adage ‘give a child a fish & you feed that child for a day. Teach a child how to fish & you feed that child for life as well as the generation(s) after’. • Scholarship Programme – Is our core programme for providing a doorway of opportunity out of the debilitating cycle of chronic poverty. This focuses on providing funds to educate children in Africa, especially girls who suffer disproportionately in society for historic cultural reasons.
