WALWORTH GOLDEN OLDIES COMMUNITY CARE PROJECT

LONDON, England, SE5 0EN United Kingdom

Mission Statement

Walworth Golden Oldies project, which was created in 1991, offers support and assistance to older people with an afro or Asian Caribbean background, but not exclusively so, to enable them to maintain healthy lifestyles. The Charity aims to promote engaging and innovative activities of benefit particularly - but not exclusively, of elderly people living in Southwark seeking to improve their health, well being and social, digital and financial inclusion in any manner which now or hereafter may be deemed by law to be charitable.

About This Cause

The main purpose of Golden Oldies is to provide support and care for senior members of our community aiming to bring some happiness, joy and laughter to help improve and enhance their lifestyle. A major issue faced is social isolation and the loneliness this brings. Our weekly friendship and lunch club provides a regular place for seniors to attend, have a hot culturally sensitive hot meal and meet and engage with others. With support from others we aim to deliver an interesting range of social, cultural, recreational, therapeutic, physical and mentally stimulating activities, appropriate for their needs. Transport is provided for people with disabilities in the Borough of Southwark. Here’s the view of Mrs I, one of our members who regularly attends and whom we have been able to help over the past years……“The club is very useful. Whenever we are here we always have a jolly time with one another; playing games, some knitting and crocheting, playing cards and having a lot of fun. All here are very pleasant and we also have our meals nicely cooked which we enjoy. It is very handy being at the Club getting a helping hand or getting to know new people and we can get acquainted with no fuss.” Mrs I, who lives on her own as her children have moved away from Southwark, is getting on in years, but makes the effort each week to attend our Club. She uses her Dial a ride allocation and attends, without her carer. This enables her to enjoy independence, avoid the isolation of being home alone, and helps her to become more socially involved, whilst gaining some direct support to help her sort out her medical and other appointments or help her to recharge her top up allowance on her mobile phone! Currently our services include: • A centre based Group befriending programme based at Walworth Methodist Church, Camberwell Road, SE5 0EN • This encourages peer to peer sharing and pooling of experiences, and offers users with shared interests, the opportunity to meet and problem solve matters on a regular basis in an informal and friendly environment. • A weekly Caribbean flavoured hot lunch based at the venue above. • This low cost service provides our members with at least one meal based on the culinary traditions they love and richly enjoy in a welcoming and friendly environment, and is followed by Prize Bingo. • A programme of wellbeing activities and events. • This occasional programme enables us to involve members in local services consultations, promote intergenerational involvement, health and wellbeing and to enhance digital learning. It includes creative writing, gardening and reminiscences opportunities, all depending on available resources. Golden Oldies Trustees are aware of the needs of our members and through regular consultations with members aim to expand our range of culturally inclusive and accessible activities and services where ever possible, as we see these as truly crucial for the improvement of their wellbeing. In response, we aim to be able to do so for the future through seeking to create affordable and enjoyable options for older people to address their needs and to socialize, from a range of possibilities including: • IT Clubs • Family fun days • Trips and outings • Arts and Crafts activities • Regular warm nourishing meals Each project in addition to having specific short-term objectives, in the longer-term aim also to promote improved physical and mental health, increased wellbeing, prolonged individual independence and arguably lead to a generally reduced call on hospitalisation or intensive care budgets, and are therefore of benefit to society and for the statutory services in general.
