Mission Statement
Our Vision is of a society which no longer accepts the structural inequalities that lead women and girls into contact with the criminal justice system. We work collaboratively in the community, custody and in prisons with women and girls facing structural inequalities through programmes and campaigns that challenge and change oppressive systems.
About This Cause
Every year, over 100,000 women in England and Wales come into contact with the criminal justice system due to systemic failings in support and protection. Most of these women face criminalisation linked to poverty, trauma, and discrimination—issues exacerbated, not alleviated, by the justice system. Women in Prison (WIP) is the only national charity in England and Wales solely dedicated to supporting women affected by the criminal justice system (CJS). WIP is a dual-purpose organisation, combining advocacy and influencing work with the delivery of direct, gender-specific, trauma-informed support services. Today, we support over 1,600 women annually through a range of holistic services, including prison-based programs, through-the-gate support, community outreach, and dedicated Women’s Centres in London and Manchester. Our work addresses the root causes of women's involvement in the CJS, including experiences of trauma, poverty, and domestic abuse, empowering women to rebuild their lives. WIP’s approach centres on collaboration with women who have lived experience, ensuring their voices shape our services and campaigns. This unique perspective informs our mission to challenge the harms of imprisonment, advocate for systemic change, and promote community-based alternatives that address women's needs with dignity and compassion. By combining grassroots action with policy advocacy, WIP continues to champion radical, lasting change for women, their families, and communities.
