Mission Statement

Southside Young Leaders Academy/ SYLA's mission is to cultivate leadership in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic boys, enabling them to pursue positive life paths and overcome all constraints. SYLA prioritizes boys who are from disadvantaged backgrounds, vulnerable and at risk of social and educational exclusion. SYLA’s programme empowers the boys to be strong and self-reliant individuals, positive and active citizens and prepares them to be a new generation of community and business leaders.

About This Cause

Since 2007, SYLA has mentored more than 200 boys, provided skills training to over 60 parents and established in-school programmes in over 20 schools. In 2019 the charity was featured in a BBC short film focussing on the need for early intervention in the effort to stop knife crime in the UK and the links between poverty, school exclusions and crime. SYLA’s aims are to: • motivate boys to achieve their leadership potential; • broaden their vision and expose them to the opportunities of the wider world; • support the boys in achieving the highest standards in school; • develop each boy's life and social skills; and • help each boy appreciate the importance of learning. SYLA seeks to achieve its stated aims via a number of structured programmes: • After School Education Programme: evening sessions focussing on English and Maths. • Saturday Programme: a mix of sports activities , reflection/reading and writing activities and external visits (e.g. to the Imperial War museum). • Easter Programme: a mix of sports activities and sit-down sessions aimed at educating the boys on the dangers of knife crime and keeping safe. • Summer Programme: a trip to WW1 sites in France with input from historians and a UK sailing programme (typically on the Isle of Wight).
