About This Cause

CLASP is a Wokingham charity supporting adults with learning disabilities to speak up for themselves. Our mission is: “To develop independence through self-advocacy for adults living with a learning disability, and to make a positive difference to our community". CLASP believes that everyone should be valued and treated equally. Staff and self-advocates work together to raise awareness of learning disabilities and important issues affecting the local learning disability community. We empower people with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities and choices as everyone else. Self-advocates are involved in all areas of the charity’s delivery and our Board of Trustees and staff team includes people with learning disabilities. As well as providing self-advocacy services, we run several projects and groups including: • Listen To Us: Our training group, creating and delivering learning disability awareness training to schools, local businesses and support providers. Winners of Queens Award for Voluntary Services in 2021. • Take Notice: Our campaigning group, working on important projects such as Hate Crime. • Weekly Coffee Shop: A social place where self-advocates are a part of the local community, sharing news and information – a friendship group open to all. • Choir: An inclusive choir, improving mental wellbeing and holding performances in the local community. • Happy & Healthy Club: a weekly group covering crafts, mindfulness, healthy eating and exercise • Dancing to Music: Encouraging members to get active • Personal Centred Plans: one to one support to assist with independent living and goals. • Learning Disability Partnership Board (LDPB): An empowering and inclusive network, working together to break down barriers and enable positive outcomes for people with learning disabilities and their families. and much more CLASP have grown in stature and presence in the last 24 months. Our membership has increased by over 50% and we have stakeholders in the borough reach out to us on a monthly basis for support with their projects - WBC Library for making the library more accessible for those with disabilities, or WBC town council to ensure the paving network is suitable for disabled and easy to navigate. Alongside Balfour Beatty who contacted us regarding new road networks etc. CLASP Listen To Us recently won the Queens Award for raising awareness. This has an impact on sustainability, so we are constantly revisiting our cost base against our offerings to ensure that we can meet demand without compromising on quality. As explained we offer activities, education, signposting and pathways to ensure better reach and intergration with other services. We advise our local council on gaps in services, campaign for better outcomes - in particular with health as adults with learning disabilities die up to 25 years earlier than their peers from preventable illness. There is always more to do.
