Mission Statement

Burns is 'the forgotten global public health crisis’ (WHO). In low income countries and conflict settings, burn patients often receive delayed, inadequate or inappropriate treatment leading to unnecessary suffering, disfigurement, disability or death.

About This Cause

"Burns affect over 11 million people each year. 95% of burn injuries occur in low-income countries. Over 70% of these are children.” From an initial link in 2006 between burn surgeons in India and the UK, Interburns has developed into a highly regarded UK-based charity responsible for developing a comprehensive approach to quality improvement which has been implemented in countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. With a global network of burns specialists, Interburns has developed a comprehensive, integrated approach to improving the quality of burn care. This approach has been implemented in countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. From spearheading community first aid and prevention programmes, to training in burns from intermediate to advanced levels, Interburns works to ensure that all burn patients have access to good care, despite limited resources. Our training programmes are built ‘from the ground up’ for low resource settings and lead to measurable improvements in burn services. Our global network of dedicated burn specialists helps us deliver programmes that increase the pool of well-trained professionals ‘one healthcare worker at a time’. Care of burn patients has advanced rapidly in high income countries, but achieving sustained quality in low resource settings requires a systematic approach that fully engages local multi disciplinary staff. Our approach includes: Operational Standards that set out the realistic levels that burn units in LMICs can achieve; the Delivery Assessment Tool (DAT) which supports staff through a process of annual self assessment to understand gaps and prioritise improvements; and tailored Training Programmes in Basic Burn Care (BBC), Essential Burn Care (BBC) and Advanced Burn Care (ABC). Fellowships at Interburns Training Centres (ITCs) in Nepal, India and South Africa offer longer term opportunities for healthcare staff to gain wider skills, whether clinical, managerial or leadership.
