Mission Statement
To improve lives through mindfulness
About This Cause
We are committed to working collaboratively with field colleagues, to research and introduce mindfulness to all areas of society and to support people with mindfulness skills to navigate difficult times and live fuller lives. We are confident that mindfulness offers a positive contribution to lives and we commit to continue researching, innovating teaching and training to improve lives through mindfulness. We are proud to work closely with the University of Oxford, UK to research and develop programme for the general population. Our story The charity was founded by Professor Mark Williams in 2008 and is now at the forefront of mindfulness research and training, focusing on Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, an integration of ancient wisdom and modern psychology underpinned by the best available science. This version of mindfulness was originally developed for people with recurrent depression and since 2004 has been recommended by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a treatment for this. 2021 and beyond The research evidence suggests that mindfulness is associated with well-being and can be of benefit to many groups of people outside a clinical context (such as students, teachers and employees). In more recent years, we have been focusing on introducing new programmes to support the well-being of the general population, thereby increasing our impact and broadening our areas of work. We continue with mindfulness research, teaching and training and collaborating with partners around the world to provide access to mindfulness in a wide range of settings. Our vision is a world in which mindfulness is accessible and integrated into everyday life, where there are mindfulness teachers and champions in all areas of society using mindfulness in their everyday work and way of living to support well-being. We move towards this by promoting the understanding of research-based mindfulness through clear communication, research, training and partnerships. This is made possible by a collaboration agreement between the University of Oxford and our not-for-profit charity, the Oxford Mindfulness Foundation. Our priorities are: 1. World class innovation, research and dissemination 2. Providing the opportunity to experience and learn mindfulness 3. Training mindfulness teachers Our commitment to making mindfulness inclusive and accessible to all extends to educating ourselves and exploring unconscious biases and unintentional exclusion in our field. This allows us to include this learning in our programmes and ensure their relevance to all aspects of society.
