Mission Statement

We believe that all autistic people and people with a learning disability should be included, valued, and empowered to live great lives.

About This Cause

The Hive Avon is a charity that works alongside adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults helping them to lead more independent lives. We believe that all people with a learning disability/autism should be included in their community, feel valued, and lead more fulfilling lives. Primarily working in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, we support 300 service users a year (plus their families/carers), providing a range of daytime and evening services aimed at increasing independence to a level that is appropriate for each individual and supporting families with dependent children and relatives. We also provide training and support for other organisations including GPs, charities, and health care providers in how to work with, support and treat adults with Learning Disabilities and/ or Autism. Everything we do comes from a need identified by service users, and we only provide services that are not offered elsewhere. Our services range from the Drop-In Centre, (a safe social place to meet with friends), an Education Programme, a Quality Checking Service, Peer Support and social events, to providing individual guidance and support to family/ parents/carers. Our ambitions for our client group are driven by a belief that people with learning disabilities/autism have the same rights to choice, education, housing, civil rights, health and employment as everyone else. WHAT WE DO / ACTIVITIES 1. Our Nurturing Independence and Growing Independence groups work with our service users, their families and carers to enable a greater number of people to live more independent lives. Each year we work with individuals and their families on issues such as housing, financial management, employment and future support needs. 2. Our Impact Training programme covers a range of workshops aimed solely at our service users. Delivered by staff with the support of volunteers, our Impact Training programme provides information and courses on themes such as health, housing, education, social services, employment, self-advocacy, relationships and staying safe online, an area our service users are particularly vulnerable to. 3. Our Peer Support Programme supports individuals in the community putting their classroom-based learning into a practical context and allowing individuals to support each other. We run Men’s and Women’s Groups where service users can discuss their lives and any issues they might have in a supportive atmosphere. 4. Our Drop-In Centre is the social side of our work, providing lots of different opportunities to build self-confidence, make friends and have fun. Open for morning, afternoon and evening sessions (Monday to Saturday), members pay £12 to attend a session to: use computers, participate in arts and crafts, play board games and pool, attend music and art sessions, socialise and make friends. The Drop-In is one example of what we do to provide affordable social and leisure activities that meet the needs of the Bristol and South Gloucestershire learning-disabled community. 5. Easy Read translation service, which public service organisations buy in to help them improve the signage in their buildings, their information leaflets, letters and forms so that they are easy to understand. 6. We provide training for support workers at other learning disability organisations on subjects such as advocacy and complaints. We are looking to increase this service. Established 55 years ago, The Hive Avon is the only organisation in Bristol that offers such a wide range of support services to adults with learning disabilities, autism, and their parents/carers. People travel from South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, North Somerset, BANES and Bristol, to access our services. Despite being a small charity, we are well placed to meet a variety of service user need because we have the capacity, capabilities and resources to deliver. The range of skills, experience and knowledge within the staff team, trustees and volunteers is very wide and not just restricted to social welfare issues. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and ethnicity.
