About This Cause

Objectives and Activities “A well of hope in a thirsty land” • The Tanzania (UK) Trust applies the income of the charity in furthering within Tanzania: the advancement of the Christian faith, promotion and protection of physical and mental health, and advancement of education. • The Tanzania (UK) Trust’s main activities/strategies for meeting these objectives are: - Fundraising from individuals, events and organisations, to meet the objectives of the Trust; - Raising awareness of the Trust and its objectives; - Partnering with the church in Dodoma, Tanzania, in meeting the Trust’s objectives. Public Benefit Statement The Tanzania (UK) Trust Trustees have complied with our duty to have due regard to guidance on public benefit published by the Commission in exercising our powers and duties. Achievements and Performance Fundraising • Sustained income for work to advance the Christian faith in the Dodoma area above £420 a month ongoing. • Specific focus for building the “Tazama na Tunza” (Look and Care) Health Centre. For this we produced a policy and Business Plan. The Health Centre will belong to the Church, our aim is to support them with both training of Health Volunteers and finance for building the Health Centre. This is our biggest venture yet. We have raised over £29,000 so far. We are preparing to appeal to other sympathetic Trusts and Charities to support us in this work. • Specific support for individual’s education: £39 a month for Lightness, £80 a month for Pastor Zephaniah’s children and £60 a month for the pastor’s continuing Theology Degree (finishing in November 2016). We support the Nursery School teachers at the Dodoma Capital Christian Centre as well with £45 a month. • Specific fund raising for the drought and resulting famine: more than £3,000 was raised. This money was raised by specific appeals. • We have raised extra funds via market stalls, a garden party, a wing walking sponsorship, a walking club sponsorship, a Black Tie Dinner event and individual and church donations. • We now have regular support from 4 churches to cover the general work of the Trust: Mottram Evangelical Church, Hattersley Community Church, Top Chapel and Mottram Anglican Church as well as regular support from the Cumber Trust. • We are continuing to maintain our method of transferring funds to Tanzania, so that they are transparently visible, and we have an independent inspection of our accounts annually; • Online giving, My Donate, Just Giving and Easy Fundraising has also been promoted to supporters in the UK. • We are covered by an Indemnity Insurance Policy with Ansvar. Memorandum of Understanding The Memorandum of Understanding between the Trust and the Tanzania Assemblies of God Church (which the Dodoma Capital Christian Church belongs to) gives clarity and guidelines to how we work in partnership. Policies The policies and risk assessments are in place, have been updated and now include the working partnership policy for the Health Centre, Tazama na Tunza Guidelines and all risk assessments. Our Tanzanian partners asked that we only invite Christians to stay with them on our trips, because of the sensitive politics and faith issues that arise there, and we are complying with their wishes. We work with CCPAS regarding safeguarding policies and individual DBS checks. We also have a Use of Visual Images agreement with the Dodoma church. UK visits to Tanzania This year we had a Medical Trip with one nurse, a publicity advocate and a prayer warrior, volunteering to go out to Dodoma: Ruth, Catherine and Carole, working with the Tanzanian Nurse Hilda and under the supervision of the local doctor, Dr Motto. They trained 25 Health Volunteers in chronic health care, visited the sick in the community and continued building up the Tazama na Tunza team, who continue to visit the chronically sick in the community. We addressed many complicated issues, including the persistent issue of how to help those who are sick, when immense poverty is at the root of the household’s ill health. The UK volunteers prepared a Swahili teaching file to use for the teaching and to leave with the volunteers, with other teaching resources. We continue to work under Dr Motto in regard to diagnosis, prescription medicines and care and treatment of the patients. A room in Mavuno house (the Church and Community offices) is used as a base for the Tazama na Tunza work. The Trust also supports the health work with £55 a month, from individual supporters. Ruth also met with the pastors and Dr Motto to discuss and renew the vision of the Tazama na Tunza Health Centre, how it will be run and how to partner in building and equipping it. We also had some generous gifts which we could give to Dr Motto and the church for the work in the community. As well as Health Work the UK volunteers also spent time with the 207 Compassion children and with the Mamas. In October a Church group from Mottram Evangelical Church also went out to visit the church in Dodoma for a week: Pastor Martin and Susan Cooling, Trustee Alan and Jenny Smith and Trustee Liz Benstead. They saw the work of the Church in Revival, the Church Plants and the medical work and work building the Health Centre. As it was a season of famine, they also saw distribution of some of the maize supply we had also funded Tazama na Tunza Health Centre With the vision and policies in place, the Tanzanian Capital Christian Centre and the Trust are now working strongly on the mutual vision to build the Health Centre and to meet the needs of those chronically sick in the community. The Trust looks at this as a 3 year program, hoping to raise the funds to enable the Health Centre to be in use within 3 years. The foundations are now in place and the walls are being built where the Health Centre rooms will be. There is a Building Committee headed up by the Doctor who will run the Health Centre, and they report regularly to the Trust. The Health Centre building has raised a lot of interest as the focus of the Trust’s work at present, but there is still considerable faith, work and money needed to meet the estimated £95,000 cost. Tanzanian Partners’ visit to the UK in 2016 Plans are in hand to invite three of the Dodoma Church to UK this year: Dr Motto, Pastor Zephaniah Mkuyu and Mama Margareth Mkuyu. Education and Training • Advocacy: an annual Trustee and volunteer visit to Dodoma for mutual edification and partnership. This year we had two visits with medical and health training first and then a partnership building church visit. • Information: Our website www.tanzaniauk.org.uk has been updated. Four newsletters were circulated through our contacts in the UK to publicise the work of the Trust. There were some church and event talks to share information, for prayer and encouragement. Catherine prepared an excellent 8 minute video, which has been very well received and is also available on our website. • Resource: provision of mobile phones and laptops (second hand) for communications, sponsorship of 6 individuals in varied education and training, supplying of basic health assessment equipment for the work of the Tazama na Tunza volunteer team in Dodoma and the Health Centre. Also the support of the Nursery School provision of the Dodoma Church by supporting the teachers there. Health Promotion • Advocacy: working with the local doctor, nurse and Health Volunteers of Tazama na Tunza in partnership to train and equip the volunteers and build the Health Centre to meet the needs of those chronically sick in the community. • Information: provision of 40 health education files in Swahili for the Tazama na Tunza volunteers, on chronic health conditions; along with other health literature for the volunteers, has been provided. • Resource: The Trust regularly pays for those patients visited in the community by Tazama na Tunza, without a clear diagnosis, to see the Doctor to get a trustworthy diagnosis so that the right advice and care can be offered. Some specific patients are also supported by individuals with payment for prescribed medication e.g. Insulin for a child diabetic. Some major treatment and surgery has also been paid for by the Trust to specific patients in need. Relief of Poverty • Advocacy: ongoing financial support for the advancement of the Christian faith in Tanzania by church giving to specific missions; • Resource: provision of recycled mobile phones and laptops to aid communication. Famine Relief • Resource: Due to the lack of rains and the resulting famine this year in the region, considerable emphasis and resources were used to relieve the famine. The Trustees were able to observe this in progress. This year we donated a number of nanny goats to the church at Christmas. These were given to those who had volunteered their services for others and were themselves poor. Future Plans Finance for the Health Centre: Our main focus this year continues to be to steadily build and finish the Health Centre. For this we need to successfully access new funds; though an amazing amount of money has been individually donated already by those who have been touched by the photos and stories coming from the Dodoma Church. • Tanzanian visits to the UK: We hope to invite Dr Motto, Pastor Zephaniah Mkuyu and Mama Margareth Mkuyu from the Dodoma church to come to UK in 2016 to build our partnership including medical and spiritual sharing. • Health promotion: To continue with training, advocacy and resourcing for the building up of the Tazama na Tunza health volunteer team. • Young People: We continue to aim to envision, equip, and mobilise more young people to participate in the
