Mission Statement

1) To relieve the suffering of animals, in particular equines, who are in need of care and attention, by providing permanent or temporary sanctuary, care and treatment. 2) To provide relief for children, young people and vulnerable people, suffering from physical and/or mental disability, through the provision of managed work with equines in a therapeutic environment to help meet their needs and to enable them to participate more fully in society; also to increase the confidence and capacity of children, young people and vulnerable people in need of support through interaction with the horses. 3) To advise and educate the public on matters concerning the welfare of horses and ponies and to set the standard in natural horsemanship.

About This Cause

Our work is two-fold. Our horses are the centre of the charity as an animal welfare organisation, but also in that without them, we simply could not offer the opportunities within the community that we do. The aim of our charity has always been to recognise the value that animals who have been discarded, neglected and/or abused can have. Animals are sentient beings and if given kindness and respect, they can give so much back to those around them. By spending time with our horses, we can offer people not only moments of respite from the challenges of daily life, but also work alongside the animals to demonstrate and teach social skills of patience, calmness and compassion to help them outside of our Sanctuary, back at home and elsewhere in their lives. We are working with an increasing number of schools, charities and community groups and our waiting list is ever-growing. Unfortunately, we continue to see a major spike in poor mental health, particularly with young people. Cases of self-harm, eating disorder and high anxiety are very high and schools and children’s services are under huge pressure to support those who are struggling. It is well-documented that the waiting list for CAMHS is long and whilst Surrey has very good support services when a child is in the CAMHS system, often it takes a little while for children to reach that point and intervention is needed earlier. Coupled with that, there are a large number of young people with other needs, perhaps they are young carers, have suffered bereavement or are living with parents with terminal illness or addiction. At Mane Chance, we try to be accessible to those who fall into these categories – offering sessions for those waiting for CAMHS or for those who need a moment away from stressful home lives. We are not qualified therapists and do not offer therapy; instead we provide a safe and calm environment in which we can run educational and respite sessions with our animals to help those who need extra support. But it is not only children that we offer support to - alongside local charities and groups, we also host sessions for adults in our community. Sessions are provided for those who, for example, live with disability, epilepsy, poor mental health, stroke recovery, brain injury, domestic abuse and those who are recently bereaved. Our Sanctuary can offer simple meet and greet opportunities or more interactive time with the horses. Sessions are planned and tailored according to the needs of each group and usually include the welcome tea and cake! We are always looking to expand our reach wider into our community to welcome more people to spend therapeutic time with our animals.
