Mission Statement

Cambridge City Foodbank was founded in 2010 by three churches in response to the growing need for emergency food in Cambridge, and as an extension of our Christian concern for local people suffering the effects of poverty. Our mission is deeply rooted in Christian values, and the majority of our activity is delivered out of local churches. We are committed to supporting individuals and families in crisis, regardless of their background, faith, or circumstance. While we work towards our ultimate goal of ending the need for foodbanks in the UK, our immediate mission is to meet the need for emergency and affordable food in Cambridge, whilst tackling the causes of poverty.

About This Cause

Cambridge is one of the most unaffordable cities to live in in the UK; poverty, financial challenges and food insecurity are becoming increasingly widespread. In 2023, at least 3,400 households in Cambridge were experiencing food poverty. To support people facing these challenges, Cambridge City Foodbank operates eight Welcome Centres throughout the city. These provide 17,000 3-day emergency food parcels per year to families in need. To support those facing chronic poverty, we operate five Social Supermarkets (Fairbite Food Clubs), in which members can access staple food items and on-site services that aim to tackle the root causes of their poverty. Within these Fairbite Food Clubs, we operate our Financial Inclusion Project in partnership with Cambridge Citizens Advice.
