Mission Statement
The CRUMBS Project passionately advocates for the rights of adults with disabilities to work, to be regarded as equally valuable employees, and to feel included in society. We are a small disability training charity providing hospitality-based training and development programmes. Our mission is to address the scarcity of opportunities available to disadvantaged adults. Our charitable objective is to “promote education and social inclusion of disadvantaged individuals by providing learning and training designed to assist in progress towards better employment and a more independent life through vocational training.”
About This Cause
The CRUMBS Project is a disability training charity helping to change the lives of adults with disabilities, neurodivergences, or mental health conditions through hospitality-based ‘training for independence’, which creates pathways to work and empowers them to lead more fulfilling lives. Who we work with: We provide training and development programmes for around 25 adults a year aged between 18-70 with disabilities, neurodivergences, mental health conditions, stabilised addictions, or acquired brain injuries. Our trainees are some of the most disadvantaged people in society. The majority have learning disabilities, with 75% displaying literacy and numeracy levels at Entry Level 3 or below. Many also have neurodivergent conditions like Autism, ADHD, and Dyslexia, or physical disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy, developmental coordination disorder, or joint hypermobility. Our trainees vary in age and life experience, many come from residential settings, are typically NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) or not working, and all are eligible for state benefits. What we do: We help to change the lives of these disadvantaged adults by providing professionally recognised hospitality-based training and development programmes in Food Production & Service, Housekeeping, Administration, and Digital Skills. Our programmes enable trainees to develop the professional, digital, and life skills that prepares them for a variety of roles within the Hospitality industry and encourage them to live more independently. How we do it: We deliver professional Institute of Hospitality endorsed training. We use flexible and accessible training methods and resources to deliver practical immersive training via the training kitchen, bakery, laundry, kitchen garden, and dining areas of our professional training centre in Bournemouth, along with dedicated digital skills training. Our trainees join on a rolling basis and typically spend two years on training programmes tailored to their individual needs and goals, gaining practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and social skills. They learn cooking, food, and nutrition skills to enhance their health and well-being. They develop digital skills in our computer room and via our online eLearning modules specifically designed to be accessible for people with learning disabilities. We also help those who need more literacy, numeracy, or digital support to develop the skills to become more independent. What makes us special: We are proud to be a Disability Confident Leader proactively demonstrating our commitment to creating inclusive environments, supporting individuals with disabilities, and championing their right to work, to be treated as equally valuable employees, and to feel included in society. Over 50% of our staff members have a disability. We pride ourselves on providing a friendly and inclusive environment where our trainees learn a variety of professional, practical, digital, and social skills, make friends, and develop greater self-sufficiency for their future lives.
