Mission Statement

The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) is a charity which supports the training and education of talented and aspiring craftspeople, with the aim to support Britain’s cultural heritage and sustain vital skills in traditional and contemporary crafts. QEST awards grants to professional makers to support traditional college courses, vocational training, apprenticeships and one-to-one training with a master craftsperson; and funds programmes to inspire the next generation of makers.

About This Cause

QEST, Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust, was formed in 1990 by the Royal Warrant Holders Association to mark the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. The charity’s Patron is the Former Prince of Wales (since 2017). The charity funds the training and education of talented and aspiring craftspeople through traditional college courses, vocational training, apprenticeships or one on one training with a master craftsperson; helping to support Britain’s cultural heritage and sustain vital skills in traditional and contemporary crafts. Over the last 33 years, QEST has awarded some £5.5 million to almost 800 individual craftspeople in around 130 craft skills, from the traditional to the contemporary. Almost 90% of those supported are still practising their craft, contributing to the significant craft and creative industries in the UK. The charity has two application rounds per year awarding around 40 + scholarships annually over the past few years - some £400-£450 k. QEST wishes to increase its annual charitable giving to £1 million by end 2024 (£750 k in 2023), and which will include programmes it is currently developing as part of its Crafting Tomorrow strategy - to inspire and engage the future generation of professional makers. This includes an already launched partnership with the National Saturday Club to develop Craft&Making Clubs across the UK for 13–16-year-olds, many from disadvantaged backgrounds and under-represented communities; as well as other widening participation projects and programmes. QEST also introduced an Emerging Makers Grant in July 2023, aimed at those who have been practising their craft professionally for typically less than four years, and thus continuing to help build the pipeline of future creators and makers.
