Mission Statement

The Polish Scouting Association (UK Region) is a registered charity which promotes the physical, mental, and spiritual development of young people in accordance with the principles and traditions of the Scout and Guide Movements. Run entirely by volunteers, our programmes run age-appropriate scouting/guiding activities in over 120 locations in the UK, mainly in large cities. Our aim is to encourage young people to gain new skills, challenge themselves through new experiences and gain an understanding of the worth of serving the community. Through our programmes, we want young people to gain confidence and become valuable members of society. We are part of the larger independent Polish Scouting Association (International) (ZHP) operating in, amongst other places, the US, Canada and Australia. We have three activity centres open to the whole community.

About This Cause

The Polish Scouting Association (UK Region), entirely run by volunteers, runs cub/brownie packs and scout/guide groups which meet weekly in over 120 locations in the UK mainly in large cities. Membership has grown rapidly in recent years with new units being founded. The groups follow a programme of age-appropriate scouting/guiding activities. Our ethos encompasses a love of nature and the outdoors, so activities out in the open countryside are a key focus. Our aim is to encourage young people to gain new skills, challenge themselves through new experiences and gain an understanding of the worth of serving the community. Through our programmes we want young people to gain confidence and become valuable members of society through fun and challenging activities that promote teamwork, time management, leadership, communication, planning, self-motivation and commitment. Many families in our community are new migrants struggling to secure the future for their families. We run three activity centres: The St. Briavels activity centre in the Forest of Dean (an area of outstanding natural beauty), above the River Wye, was purchased in 1963 and has been a base for camping and pack holidays for a variety of groups for over 50 years until its closure, for health and safety reasons, in 2013. The Association has embarked on a development programme to bring the centre up to modern standards. It is sorely missed by our scout groups, as well as many schools and youth groups which also used to stay there. Many of the children come from deprived inner city areas and St. Briavels is their first experience of scouting, outdoor living and skills development. We need to bring the centre back into use as soon as we can so that we can offer the full outdoor scouting experience to members and to other community youth groups. We are progressing well with our redevelopment project which, when complete, will have two accommodation buildings, both for 38 persons, and 4 camping fields. More information can be found on http://www.stanicastbriavels.uk/en/ The Fenton activity centre in Lincolnshire was purchased in 1971 and has been developed into a fantastic centre accommodating 100 people. Used regularly by scouts and guides and other community groups, it has become a valuable asset for meetings, camps and events. The Penrhos activity centre in North Wales has been leased by the Association since 1950 and offers accommodation for 50 people. Not far from the Snowdonia National Park, the centre is close to the sea and offers a variety of unique outdoor experiences. Our organisation, known as the Polish Scouting Association (Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego/ZHP), founded in 1910, flourished in Poland between the two World Wars. The outcome of World War II left many Poles to migrate to countries around the world. With further migrations in the following decades, we continue to serve young Polish scouts and guides around the world. The Polish Scouting Association (UK Region) is part of the wider Polish Scouting Association (International), an independent scouting organisation with the head office in London, operating in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, United States and United Kingdom. The Polish Scouting Association (UK Region) is a registered charity in England and Wales and Scotland. We are proud of our achievements in supporting young Poles to understand their cultural roots, maintain the Polish language, and become valuable citizens in the country in which they live.
