About This Cause
Winchester Go LD is a small local charity providing support to adults with learning disabilities (our members) and their families in the Winchester area. Our vision is to enable people with learning disabilities to live life to the full. This is achieved through offering choice and encouraging independence. We have 90 members living in and around Winchester; we have welcomed 8 new members during lockdown. We do not charge for membership to Winchester Go LD. Winchester Go LD understands the importance for people with learning disabilities to live independently and manage their own self-care, productivity, leisure activities and social interaction. Our work contributes to the fostering of a healthy society that gives care to those in need and provides opportunity for all while encouraging community engagement. Our members are vulnerable; they need our support to maintain their mental and physical fitness and to thrive. Adults with learning disabilities are twice as likely to suffer with mental health issues than the normal population; it is also well recognized that adults with learning disabilities are particularly prone to physical illnesses such as mobility disorders, respiratory conditions, obesity and diabetes. We facilitate independence through cultivating self-confidence and developing life skills; we also support friendships and relationships between our members. We encourage and assist inclusion within our local community. We have successfully supported 27 of our members into employment and voluntary work positions; many of our members take part in community groups such as choirs and the performing arts. Winchester Go LD provides a range of weekly and monthly group activities and we offer one to one advocacy and life planning programmes. Activities focus around health, wellbeing, communication, friendship, community, enterprise and development. We run weekly group lunch clubs, drop-ins, afternoon tea, arts and crafts, Tai Chi and low-level circuit training. Monthly evening social events throughout the year including pub visits, bowling, nature walks. Day trips are organised during the summer holidays.
