Mission Statement
My Life Films is an award-winning charity that uses film and TV to improve the lives of people living with dementia and support those who care for them, through life-story filmmaking and the on demand, dementia-friendly streaming service, My Life TV. Our vision is a world where PLWD aren't defined by their illness but have the best possible quality of life.
About This Cause
Our services use the power of film and TV to improve the quality of life and care for people living with dementia. My Life TV is our innovative on demand streaming service, with all content carefully created and curated to enable people living with dementia to feel stimulated and connected to the world, improving their mental health and supporting their essential care. It contains a rich mix of high quality content: interactive activities like quizzes, singalongs, drawing & chair yoga; calming content like animal or nature programmes and slow TV; a wide range of reminiscence programmes from the 1960s onwards as well as joyful entertainment shows to bring smiles and laughter. We work with highly respected content partners as well as producing our own programming in partnership with trusted organisations in the dementia care field and more widely. In our biographical films service, one of our trained filmmakers creates a package of personalised life story films for individual PLWD, giving them a form of reminiscence therapy and providing care workers with a quick way of getting to know them. The impact of all our work is focused on improving the mental health and wellbeing of PLWD, enabling their paid care workers to deliver higher-quality care and giving their primary carers an opportunity for respite. We are committed to delivering lasting impact that we measure, and which is backed by robust research and testing. We always collaborate with other charities and organisations in other sectors where possible as we recognise the power of mutually beneficial partnerships and sharing learning. Our biographical films service was validated in a 2019 clinical study by South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust (published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology) which concluded that our personalised life story films can decrease dementia symptom levels, improve quality of life, help paid care workers to deliver person-centred care, support routine care and in some instances, reduce drug use. We were awarded Outstanding Dementia Care Product of the Year in 2016 and our work has helped more than 3,000 people affected by dementia.
