Mission Statement
Giving today's street and slum children a better tomorrow
About This Cause
"The best thing I feel about Future Hope is that it helps us in lots of ways and in return it only wants us to stand on our own feet and lead a beautiful life. Future Hope makes me feel safe. It supports me to be independent. It gives us the opportunity to become good human beings and it helps us to live in the society proudly" - Rita, 18 years old Rita has been with Future Hope since she was 6 years old. Her early memories are of an extremely abusive father who beat up her mother at night when he came home drunk to their tiny slum dwelling. Instead of using his daily wages for food, he would spend it on cheap alcohol letting his young wife and daughter go hungry. When one night he beat the mother almost to death, Rita’s maternal uncle turned to Future Hope for help. Future Hope - founded in 1987 - is a charitable organisation which provides opportunity through its homes, school, sports and medical programme for some of the most vulnerable children from the streets and slums of Kolkata in India. Over three decades many things have moved on in India, yet many thousands of children still live on the streets, abused, exploited and maimed. Future Hope responds to these problems by taking the most vulnerable children who have no family capable of caring for them into one of their homes, whilst also offering them, and children from the very poorest families in the slums, an all-round education at Future Hope School. Future Hope helps these children overcome their poor start in life to become independent and caring adults. Future Hope takes a long-term view for each child and offers them support for around 15 years. Rita is now in her final year of school and it is her dream to build a career in Technology. Her next step is to move out of the Future Hope Family into a university hostel to pursue a degree in Computer Application. "When a child gets to sleep in our homes without fear or abuse, when they can come to school and feel failure is accepted, when they can sleep safely at night and eat three healthy meals every day or believe their families and communities can come to us for help, they know there is a place to TRUST. Other values that we embrace are: OPPORTUNITY for every child to realise their full potential; Long-term COMMITMENT to give them every chance of success; TOLERANCE for a safer, more inclusive world and building all our work around CARE to give children stability, healthcare, nutrition and education.” Sujata Sen, CEO Annually Future Hope cares for 130+ children in its six homes, we provide 400 children with an all-round school education, support 110+ students through College or University and train 350+ youth in our Skills Centre (and soon doubling up!) to help make them employable. For over 35 years, we have permanently improved the lives of over 3000+ children and impacted many more including their families and the communities where they come from. Future Hope School educates and empowers, offering an excellent all-round education to street & slum children who are given the opportunity to realise their potential and find a path to an independent life. The pandemic threw education in Kolkata into chaos with all schools closed for nearly two years and only the lucky 11% of the population having access to online learning. Thanks to our supporters we can count our children amongst these as we swiftly managed to get online classes up and running, even for our day scholars by providing access to technology. The students and teachers are now delighted to be back to face to face learning and despite all our efforts to keep school going online, it has become apparent that many of the children have missed out on so many aspects of Future Hope school life; from good food to healthcare, social interaction, role models, sport, arts and friendships. However there were also many positive outcomes from online school, the most apparent being the introduction of technology to our students and teachers. As Vijay in Class 3 explains, “It was a challenging experience but I also enjoyed it. I was not online friendly but now I can operate a mobile and computer independently. Before I would not try or learn how to use technology. Now I feel that nothing can stop me.” Future Hope depends entirely on the generosity of individuals and organisations for its running costs. Donations go directly towards providing security and opportunity for our children. For £49 a month you send a child to Future Hope School where they enjoy an all-round education which sets them up for life. Thank you for your support!
