Mission Statement

Asylos, a volunteer-powered organisation, conducts research for asylum claims in the UK and beyond. Our aim is to ensure that every refugee has the evidence they need to claim their right to asylum and live in safety. Our vision is a world in which all asylum decisions are based on fair process and accurate information. Our mission consists of the following aspects: Access to information. Country of Origin Information (COI) is accessible to all who need it. People seeking asylum and their legal counsel have access to relevant, timely and high-quality information to substantiate their claims. Use of information. The asylum procedure is always evidence-based. Relevant, timely and high-quality Country of Origin Information is considered in every asylum decision. Absence of prejudice. The asylum procedure is always unbiased. Processes involving people seeking asylum are conducted in a fair and impartial manner with no room for assumptions or preconceptions. Societal Awareness. There is broad recognition within host societies of the importance of high-quality COI in the asylum procedure.

About This Cause

Asylos’ volunteer-powered team works to ensure that every refugee has the evidence they need to claim their right to asylum and live in safety. We provide tailored, free of charge research to lawyers so they can better assist clients with relevant evidence required to claim refugee status. By providing lawyers with objective and fact-based research, we ensure that people seeking asylum are recognised as requiring international protection, are able to fulfil their fundamental needs. Next to our research, we also train current and future professionals to conduct their own research so they can continue working towards a just and better world, and we review and publish commentaries about Country of Origin Information produced by government bodies and intergovernmental organisations to advocate for improved evidence in the refugee status determination process. Since 2010, our international network of volunteers has assisted over 14,000 people seeking asylum from 105 countries. We produced over 650 exhaustively-documented, bespoke research reports provided free-of-charge. 94% of beneficiaries indicated that our reports provided them with information that they did not have before. While 71% of the cases we provided research for resulted in a positive outcome. We delivered 24 research training webinars for 526 participants. 98% of participants felt more confident in researching and using COI as a result. We produced five thematic research reports on trafficking in Trafficking in Vietnam and Albania respectively, on returnees to Afghanistan, on the treatment of LGBTQI+ people in Ghana and on disabilities in Nigeria. The interview-based reports address pertinent information gaps and have been used by nearly 10,000 people seeking asylum. We are committed to creating a sustainable system which ensures that every asylum applicant has access to high-quality documentation. In addition to stepping up our production of high-impact reports, we are expanding our operations to reach more refugees by reaching more lawyers in more host countries. To do that we must strengthen our capacity. We have the backing of some of the world’s foremost philanthropists, but we need your help to give more asylum-seekers a chance at justice.
