Mission Statement
Our purpose is to bring the future of healthcare to children by investing in technology and innovation which improves child health outcomes.
About This Cause
Thinking of Oscar was founded following the unexpected death of Oscar Cole in 2014. Oscar was a sturdy toddler and in hospital being routinely treated for an infection when he took a sudden turn for the worse and died. His parents, Hannah and David, felt compelled that his story should not end there and so founded Thinking of Oscar. What happened to Oscar is incredibly unlikely to happen to any other child and so the remit of the charity is deliberately broad. We are interested in making investments which are over and above those which the NHS can make. Examples of projects that we have already delivered include but are not limited to: (1) Vein Finding devices which reduce stress and anxiety for patients and parents alike during blood tests or cannulations by aiding the identification of suitable veins. (2) Super hero kits into several UK Children's hospitals which give some control back into the hands of children at a time when they may feel out of control. (3) Piloting the use of some simple sleeves which mean that young children can be cannulated, or have PICC lines in place with a much reduced risk of them pulling those pieces out. (4) Interactive Floor Projectors which distract children ahead of simple operations or procedures. Distraction has been proven to reduce the perception of some levels of discomfort. Following our #too500 campaign in 2019 which marked our 5th anniversary we are working with a number of new partner hospitals on some extremely exciting projects, details of which will follow via our website www.thinkingofoscar.com.
