Mission Statement
British Blind Sport is the only national sports charity specifically for children and adults with sight loss in the UK. BBS uses the power of sport to change lives and help people with sight loss be more active, healthy and independent.
About This Cause
There are over 2 million people with sight loss in the UK and we exist to ensure that people with sight loss can enjoy the benefits of sport and physical activity. At BBS, we know that physical activity has the huge potential to transform the health and wellbeing of people with sight loss. Research shows that regular physical activity boosts self-esteem, mood, energy and reduces stress as well as providing valuable opportunities to socialise and feel part of an active community. “Only 12% of people with sight loss regularly take part in regular physical activity yet more than 62% want to take part in sport but experience barriers due to their disability” BBS’ mission is to achieve equal opportunities for all people with sight loss in sport and physical activity and ensure that sport and regular physical activity is accessible for all people with sight loss in the UK. - Two-thirds of people with severe sight loss live below the poverty line - Over 90% of those who lose their sight in their youth will never have a long-term job - People with sight loss are more likely to experience loneliness and nearly half report feeling isolated and cut-off from society Every year, BBS reaches 5000+ people through our events, services and project work. BBS supports people with sight loss of all abilities to participate in a wide range of physical activity and sport from home-based exercise to activities at clubs, schools & leisure centres and all the way up to elite international competition. “Sport has helped me to overcome the sadness of losing my vision. There have been times in my life when sport has given me a purpose where otherwise I might not have had one” David, BBS Member, International Blind Cricketer and Goalball player Our key work includes: 'Have A Go Days' which are multi-sport taster days for children and adults across the UK, BBS Sport Sections that co-ordinate national competitions in Cricket, Archery, Shooting and Tenpin, See My Voice a social action project for teens with sight loss to develop leadership & employability skills through volunteering in their communities, First Steps. an early intervention project for children aged 2-11yrs with VI to develop their motor skills & confidence in moving and being active and the SportsFinder service which connects people to activities. “BBS has really helped me to believe anything is possible again, which living in a mainstream society knocks out of you daily” Mother of Jamie (7 years old)
