About This Cause

Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Samaritans, registered charity 1170657 is a self-funding branch affiliated to The Samaritans Organisation, registered charity 219432. We have 72 volunteers who commit to shifts week in week out, during the day and night to provide the Samaritan service to our callers who need help, some at the most desperate times of their lives. People talk to us anytime they like, in their own way – about whatever’s getting to them. In addition we have a further 13 volunteers who work in our Charity Shop which reopened in July 2020 after COVID-19 lockdown. In 2019, Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre supported over 2,000+ contacts per month either through telephone, text messaging or email contacts, as well as face to face callers in the branch. As an affiliated branch the onus is upon us to maintain both of our properties in Blackpool town centre, cover utility costs and telephone charges, provide training facilities, fund our Outreach projects and support our listeners at H.M.P. Kirkham as well as make an annual contribution to the central charity. Our Outreach volunteers are involved with high risk groups within the local community, attending several local events, meeting the general public raising awareness about the service we provide. Giving talks to people in their workplace has proved to be very successful and some of our volunteers have been instrumental in creating an awareness package relating to mental health. Supporting the military is a new initiative for Samaritans focusing on mental health, welfare support and general healthy living. Working with young people is something that we value and through our partnership with Blackpool and the Fylde College we attend various events. The branch is very successful in recruitment and selection, scheduling a cycle of selection evenings where prospective volunteers can discuss the requirements of becoming a Samaritan and all it entails. Those who are successful are taken through two induction programmes over the course of a year. Training these volunteers and developing the skills of existing members of our branch is essential to our listening service. Volunteering is most rewarding and encourages people to grow and develop as individuals. We place great importance on Diversity and Equality and believe it is vital to ensure our premises allow access for all regardless of disability.
