Mission Statement
At Barefoot College International UK, our mission is to empower rural communities across the globe by nurturing the inherent skills, knowledge, and potential of rural women. We focus on enhancing literacy and imparting vocational training, with a special emphasis on women's empowerment and sustainability. By leveraging the power of solar energy and other sustainable practices, we strive to create self-sufficient, resilient, and flourishing communities. We believe that lasting change is grassroot-driven, hence our dedication to inclusivity, justice, and local wisdom. Our goal is to facilitate a world where every rural individual, irrespective of their formal education, has the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in their community and the environment, promoting a healthier, equal, and more sustainable planet.

This is the world BCI UK is steadfastly working to create, and you could play a part in this transformative journey. BCI UK is an influential non-profit organisation, recognised for driving significant progress in 14 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We ground our work in local partnerships, and locally run training centres, implementing initiatives that provide sustainable economic uplift and carve out new educational and vocational opportunities for women and girls from underserved rural communities. By contributing to our cause, you will play an instrumental role in bridging the global skills gap, fighting climate change, and empowering rural women around the world. We have a worldwide footprint with a broad spectrum of programmes such as Solar, Education, Agri Livelihoods, Enriche (a comprehensive women’s empowerment curriculum), Water, and Health. Our unique approach equips rural women to become change-makers in their communities—leaders and entrepreneurs who preserve local traditions, inspire upcoming generations, and pass on essential skills and knowledge. These women become bearers of sustainable, clean energy, with the skills to build, install and maintain solar lighting systems and solar products. This transition from reliance on fossil fuels drastically improves climate and health outcomes and fosters further economic opportunities for rural women. Our impact is felt globally, with a reach of over 3 million people, and over 3,500 women trained as Solar Engineers. We are known for driving innovative partnerships that spur systemic and policy change. We collaborate with national governments, private sector entities, and philanthropic institutions, as well as our generous donors, and have established a network of training centres in locations including Burkina Faso, Senegal, Tanzania/Zanzibar, Madagascar, and Guatemala. We're excited soon to expand our reach with a new centre in Fiji. Our tireless efforts have received international recognition, earning us a spot in the Top 20 of the Global Journal's 500 NGO rankings and prestigious awards such as the WISE Prize and the Energy Globe Award.
