Mission Statement
Our mission is to rescue & re-habilitate socially, emotionally & physically unwanted pet pigs & give them a safe & loving home, forming trust bonds and giving them the 5 freedoms they deserve. Alongside & in harmony with our porcine rescue programme, we offer teaching, learning, mental health & wellbeing to humankind, and are all-inclusive, through direct interaction with the rescued animals at the sanctuary which enriches both human & porcine life. We all share one planet, no matter our species or abilities.
About This Cause
Curly Tails is a charity that is founded upon porcine rescue, rehabilitation & recovery. It is one of the only exclusively porcine rescue centres in England & Wales, that is a registered charity and the only charity that offers a combined & simultaneous human and animal enrichment programme. We have blossomed over the past 5 years into a teaching, learning, education & mental health wellbeing centre for humankind with a programme that runs in harmony and alongside our porcine rescue effort. We are non-commercial and non-exploitative, never using the animals for breeding as a commercial attraction or selling to profiteer. We are all inclusive and benefit many organisations & groups: Examples of this are: Schools, Pre-Schools and Nurseries, PRU Schools, Home Education Groups, Additional needs groups and service users within the community via local councils, Care Homes & Respite visits, Embrace (Support for Child Victims of Crime), The local Autism Society, Macintyre, Phoenix Rising, White Spires, Brixworth Nursery Farm (Adult & Young Adult Service User Groups with additional needs and specific diagnosis), Bucks Young Carers, HMP Grendon Underwood & Springhill-reintegration programmes, The Scout & Guide Movement, Local Children's Centres, Local Church Groups, Women's Institute, National Citizenship Scheme/Action4Youth/NCS, NQT induction days, College & University Placement students, DofE Students, Work experience for additional needs students, We offer respite sessions for adults & children with specific diagnosis including autism, ADHD, ASD, Anxiety, Other physical & mental challenges, Occupational Health links with MKUH & HMP Grendon Underwood, Large local companies that use their community volunteer days here e.g. Network Rail, Santander, Rightmove, VW/Audi, John Lewis, Aberdeen Asset Management. Team Building Days for various local companies as well. We also offer Private Visits, Children's Parties, Experience Mornings, One-to-one sessions. We offer on-line advise for pig keepers and indeed, our reach is worldwide, often receiving enquiries from USA & much of Europe from people who seek help. We also have a re-homing programme and a porcine matching service/re-homing register so that we can help as many animals as possible even if they cannot come to the sanctuary. Re-homing a pet pig is remarkably difficult as they are often purchased without research or mis-sold and need a different environment than that of a domestic animal which results in many healthy animals being euthanised. The sanctuary sits in 6 acres of land under a canopy of trees making the surrounding environment both peaceful, natural and sensory. Part of the charm of Curly Tails is that is has evolved over the past 5 years rather than being purpose built. We care very much about the surrounding environment and go to great lengths to preserve this and work alongside our natural wildlife to maintain their natural habitat too. We re-use and recycle natural materials to build shelters for our wildlife such a hibernation stations for our dwindling hedgehog population. The sanctuary is called 'The Happy Place' by so many. We are not government funded and fundraise ourselves to keep the sanctuary open, running and to able to care for our rescued animals, mostly through educational visits, tours and specific fundraising campaigns. In summary, we offer love, kindness, wonder, joy, bonds, empathy, understanding & enrichment. We all share one planet and whilst we cannot save every animal on the planet or help every person, we make a world of difference to ones that we do and by doing that, we are creating a far reaching ripple effect....
