About This Cause

The 5H Centre, promotes the emotional health and well being of children and adults with mental health conditions such as Autism, Aspergers and emotional health issues, through the relationship built with horses and ponies in Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) therapy sessions. Our "Jigsaw" Ranch sessions aim to help young people find missing pieces of themselves and solve puzzles about their emotions/views of self through Equine Facilitated Learning therapy sessions. The EFL sessions that we offer to children and adults help people make changes on a long term basis. There is much research on EFL , and from our work over the past years, we’ve seen young people change and develop techniques to help cope with what life throws at them: • Confidence and resilience builds over time, caring for and being responsible for another living creature, even for a short period of time, brings people out of themselves • Reduction in negative behaviours • Learning and development opportunities opened up We see young people succeed in building their self esteem, having the accomplishments of gaining qualifications and making successful applications for jobs which once would not have been possible. We advocate the fact that horses have a calming influence and bring out self belief in people. The horses that are used in these sessions are rescues that we have rehabilitated ourselves. There is much research on EFL, including: " ...enhances positive behaviours, reduces negative behaviours and has helped people with mental health problems… can be as effective as other therapies currently in use and could be an alternative to talking and existing experimental and creative therapies...” CANTIN Anna, MARSHALL-LUCETTE Sylvie.
