Mission Statement

Teach2Teach International is an education charity founded in response to two global challenges: low educational attainment of primary school children, and high levels of youth unemployment. Currently, two thirds of children in the Northern Region of Ghana live in poverty (UNICEF 2020), and only 54% complete primary school, compared to 94% nationally. The core conviction that underlies all of Teach2Teach’s work is that education is the most important and effective tool that communities can use to lift themselves out of poverty. Our mission is to ensure that ‘no child is left behind’. Our mission is to transform lives in marginalised and hard to reach communities by providing access to high-quality training and education. Our projects are dual impact, consolidating community-based strategies for inclusive and adaptive education for girls, children with disabilities, mainstream students and out-of-school children transitioning into mainstream school. We facilitate talented but unemployed young people to become community volunteer teachers and future leaders. By responding to these issues we can help lift children and youth out of poverty, minimise early and forced marriage, and provide young people in the most deprived areas with essential skills and optimism for the future. Our transformative programs create a multiplier effect for young people to become independent, leaders of social change in their local communities. T2T works to meet multiple needs including: under-performing schools, a severe lack of employment opportunities for young people, with youth unemployment as high as 48% in the areas where we work, poor academic opportunity for disadvantaged students and insufficient education on health resilience strategies. Since 2018, T2T has trained and recruited 53, local young jobseekers, 75% of whom were women. We work to address inequalities ensuring an intersectional, inclusive approach to education. Gender equality and social inclusion are key pillars of all our programmes, inclusion being integrated into our recruitment, training and teaching processes. T2T supports targeted education that addresses the specific needs of each child. We address different layers of marginalisation and exclusion such as those due to gender, disability, geographic locations and ethnic discriminations, by identifying the systemic and structural barriers that affect the inclusion of these groups and working to increase access to education for all. T2T responds directly to several sustainable development goals. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1 - No poverty. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Quality Education for All. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 - Gender Equality. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 10 - Reduce inequality within and among nations. Our programmes are designed to be culturally specific; teachers are trained in mother-tongue adaptive methods ensuring equal opportunity for all students. Our holistic approach ensures that all beneficiaries are able to take local ownership of programmes. By providing in-service support and refresher training sessions, we commit to the continued development of CVTs as changemakers. The CVT programme provides a pathway for ambitious but disadvantaged young people to become Community Volunteer Teachers (CVTs), and a rich learning environment for their students to learn to read, write and think for themselves. Our vision is a world where all students globally have access to high-quality, inclusive, targeted education regardless of gender, disability or socio-economic circumstance, and all youth have access to employment opportunities. Our multiple programmes are local, scalable, can be adapted to any context, particularly where national education systems fail to serve students, and where skilled local teachers are urgently needed.

About This Cause

Teach2Teach International (T2T) was founded in 2017 in the belief that all children should have equal access to high-quality education, and that all young people have the right to training that provides them with skills to pursue meaningful careers and become leaders and change makers in their communities. T2T believes that investing in human capital through high-quality training and education is the best way to achieve poverty reduction. Our multiple programmes are endorsed by multiple services including the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the University for Development Studies. “Teach2Teach International is a force for good in the world and the Community Volunteer Teacher Programme is making real change in Northern Ghana.” - Mary Chinery-Hesse, Chancellor of the University of Ghana T2T’s flagship Community Volunteer Teacher (CVT) programme extends knowledge and understanding, inspires independent thought, critical thinking, a sense of community responsibility and a commitment to the common good. Our ‘learn-by-doing’ methodology, proven to work over 20 years, creates a scalable new model with a huge multiplier effect. T2T’s accelerated learning programme means CVTs learn to become high-quality teachers, proficient in inclusive and adaptive teaching processes, in just 8 days. T2T received over 950 applications for the first 30 places on the CVT programme. We have now trained over 50 teachers, over 75% of whom are women. T2T's unique and innovative approach mainstreams core CBE methodology, developed by our partners School for Life (SfL), and enhances it to provide a holistic learning programme, adding community teaching approaches, leadership and effective communication techniques, and creating an additional focus on safeguarding, disability and community/beneficiary feedback mechanisms. T2T and SfL Ghana wrote, designed and produced the Teach2Teach CVTP Teacher Training Manual, recognised by all of our stakeholders, partners and supporters as a teaching resource of the highest standard, with particular endorsement from GES. Our bespoke training manual trains teachers in essential, inclusive teaching practices meaning CVTs are trained in the best, modern, child-centred teaching practices. “Being a Teach2Teach teacher means a lot to me. I’m feeling very confident, and I know that now I’m someone in my community, and I can prove that I can do something as a woman in my community. I can help my brothers and sisters to also come forward, in order to raise up our community.” - Sulemana Sharatu, Community Volunteer Teacher The CVT programme has a huge impact on students, 60% of CVTs continue as community volunteer teachers after graduating from the programme. In the areas where we work there has been a 19% uplift in numeracy and literacy levels after just five months. Through the deployment of high-quality teachers to local schools we have impacted over 9,000 children. Key outcomes of our programmes are; improved student enrolment and retention rates in marginalised communities, including for persons with disabilities and girls, reduced teacher and pupil lateness and absenteeism, reintegration of students who have been out of school and improved education levels. Our approach achieves educational results for primary school children in 10 months that take 3 years using traditional teaching methods. Working in partnership with BookAid International, T2T’s Community Volunteer Teachers have set up after school reading clubs to encourage children in their schools to participate in extra-curricular activities and to further develop their education. After school reading clubs give students additional support in the process of learning to read and improving reading skills. This additional support with this crucial skill subsequently improves their whole educational experience. The after school clubs have had a huge impact, CVTs’ students are more engaged in reading and get more out of class work. '“The books have improved our pupils’ performance in reading and simple story telling. Reading in my school would not have been improved without the books.” - Bayuo Banaso Julious, Community Volunteer Teacher T2T trains CVTs to be health resilience champions, change-makers and mentors through our Teach4Health programme. CVT’s provide important health and well-being education to their students and communities and raise the aspirations and prospects for children in the most marginalised areas through education. Our CVTs are trained in high-quality adaptive and inclusive teaching methods. T2T works to ensure all programmes have long-term, sustainable impact by building resilience at the community-level. T2T contributes to improved community health and well-being through training CVTs to be a network of health champions in their local communities, who disseminate essential health information and promote awareness of protective health measures. T2T goes beyond simply training teachers and students. We are committed to high levels of community and multi-level local stakeholder ownership, support and adoption through training and engagement. T2T trains headteachers, qualified teachers and improves teacher quality and accountability which boost enrolment, retention and attendance rates among students and teachers. T2T promotes the value of education in the communities where we work by supporting CVTs to become champions of change. We increase agency by supporting communities to hold schools and educational institutions accountable for the work they do. “The CVT programme has completely changed the way we see things. Most parents now feel confident to allow their children to go to school because there is a teacher there to teach them” - Mba Alhassan, Local Community Leader. T2T has worked tirelessly to respond to the global education emergency caused by coronavirus pandemic. T2T CVTs provide important health and well-being education to their students and communities and raise the aspirations and prospects for children in the most marginalised areas through education. CVTs are trained to deliver high-quality, inclusive lessons on health and well-being to students, teaching essential methods to sustain a healthy lifestyle. CVTs are trained in safe classroom management, including the introduction of social distancing measures to support students as soon as schools re-open. “With the help of CVTs people now understand that it can get to you by infected people. We give the community a lot of education about COVID-19" - Alhassan Fatahiya, Community Volunteer Teacher Teach2Teach has grown from strength-to-strength, for every 10 CVTs that are trained, we estimate 2000 students are positively impacted and up to 12,000 family members are supported. T2T is committed to increasing quality, inclusive adaptive education leading to academic attainment, creating resilience and better life chances. The CVT programme provides a local solution to a global problem.
