GMC CHARITY TO END FGM

London , , N7 0DD United Kingdom

Mission Statement

Our charity is called Global Media Campaign to End FGM; (GMC). We train, fund and support over 2000 grassroots activists in 15 Countries to use all forms of media; TV, radio, digital and social. Through this, we empower local campaigns to end Female Genital Mutilation in their own communities. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a harmful traditional practice involving the cutting or removal of the external female genitalia. More than 4 million girls are estimated to be at risk from FGM annually (source: World Health Organisation). That stark figure averages out at ONE girl cut EVERY 10 Seconds. Our strategy of empowering local grassroots activists (who are often survivors) is cost-effective and data-driven; It costs less than 50 Cents to protect one girl from being cut. Our impact measurement strategy ensures our funding is going to the right place - but there is still a lot of work to do, which is why we need your help and support.

About This Cause

WHO WE ARE: Global Media Campaign to End FGM (GMC) grew out of the anti-FGM campaign housed within The Guardian newspaper, in London between 2013 and 2017. GMC was led by award-winning journalist Maggie O’Kane and Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger. Now fully independent from The Guardian, Maggie O'Kane heads a team of ex-Guardian Staffers and newer recruits to the cause, based in London and Africa. Our strategy of empowering local grassroots is a proven way to change minds and actions - for the betterment of millions of girls. We would welcome your help and support to ensure we can save as many girls as possible - as quickly as possible. Thank You. OUR SIMPLE STRATEGY: We provide training and support for local campaigners, religious leaders and journalists across 15 countries in Africa on how to use the media to effectively end FGM. These grassroots organisations are enabled to develop their own campaigns to target their local communities, using tools and small grants to broadcast in their voice, language and using personal experience. The #FrontlineEndingFGM Movement is thus a community of activists driving the campaign against FGM - and it works. Campaigners are assessed to receive direct action grants by experienced leading activists in each country to ensure the funding is being used appropriately. Our strategy of “No receipts - no repeats” ensures every penny is accounted for, with the average grant consisting of only $500. Campaigners then feedback on the results of their campaign to GMC, who can share their successes and provide future funding. WHO IS AT RISK? Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a harmful traditional practice involving the cutting or removal of the external female genitalia. It predates all religions and is performed on girls from birth, up to just before marriage and sometimes beyond.
FGM is recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women. It is nearly always carried out on minors and is a violation of the rights of children. More than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. We would welcome your help and support to ensure we can save as many girls as possible - as quickly as possible. Thank You
