About This Cause

Age Concern Windsor is a small local charity based at the Spencer Denney Centre, Windsor. We run support services and groups for older adults and their carers. We are currently we are running a Day Services, Tuesday social lunches, bingo, quiz and entertainment afternoons, ad hoc informational events and courses. These ad hoc events can be things like scams awareness, cost of living awareness and help, or courses such as cooking for one. We are just starting to run a table top gardening group. Day Service is open 9:30-14:30, Wednesday to Friday. This service offers group and individual activities to stimulate the mind and body and serves a hot nutritious meal. It gives their unpaid family/carers a break. The service attracts people who have additional care needs due to mobility/dementia or frailty. Tuesday Entertainment and groups are aimed at our able clients who come along for a chat, lunch, and entertainment. Numbers vary weekly but average 25 per session. Monthly Sunday Lunch Club averaging 20 on a regular basis. This offers a three course roast dinner within a friendly social environment providing much needed human contact as well as a hot nutritious meal. Befriending Service: matches clients with volunteers for a regular/weekly friendly chat. Builds confidence and facilitates them meeting others. Meals on Wheels Service runs 4 days/week: Supports a wider audience of vulnerable people who can’t get out, those who can’t cook or don’t wish to, those recovering from illness, hospital stays and those looking after their partners. It provides over 100 hot, fresh cooked, healthy meals, per week. The regular contact with our friendly volunteers is seen as a bonus by clients who say how helpful, kind and considerate they are. Our clients are very fragile and are frequently on their own. They have a variety of long-term health issues including, physical mobility, sensory impairment and some have mental health issues such as dementia. The lack of social stimulation and physical activity during the pandemic has meant there has been a marked deterioration in their health, including a loss of confidence and interest in life. The Befriending service will support our clients and build confidence, help them re-engage with people through groups and increase their physical activity by getting them to go out. The meals on wheels has enabled those who are unable to cook to have a healthier meal than some pre-prepared foods and has improved the diet of the clients. It has also provided carers with an easier way to deliver a healthy diet for their loved ones. The increased contact from using our services has given clients more social contact, and an avenue for asking for support, which has helped reduce feeling of isolation but also increased feelings of connectedness to the community.
