About This Cause
OKMT is based in South West London and provides music therapy and music projects for people of all ages with physical, learning, mental or neurological disability or illness in order to improve their quality of life and bring lasting benefits. We help over 450 children and adults with a wide range of needs including learning disabilities, autism, stroke, mental health or dementia by improving their emotional well-being and enhancing their communication, language, social interaction and confidence. We operate from venues in Richmond and Hounslow providing over 3,400 music sessions annually. OKMT provides 1-1 music therapy for children and adults including in schools and care homes. We also run projects in the community such as Music Club at local charity, Skylarks helping children aged one to 12 years with disabilities develop communication & listening skills and creativity. We run group music therapy in Richmond Borough's Children's Centres for toddlers with communication delay. We run an online ukulele group for children and young people with additional needs, drumming workshops and interactive poetry workshops. We provide group music therapy for adults with learning disabilities, and for people with mental health issues. We run a monthly group for elderly people with dementia or other age related conditions and their carers at Homelink Day Care Respite Centre. One of our major projects is OK Music School where our therapists use specialised methods to teach children and young people with disabilities learn to play an instrument and perform in public. 76 pupils attend and we put on 2 concerts per year where pupils gain confidence and self-esteem. They connect with others and have happier more fulfilling lives. 18 have passed 35 music exams. We also run an OK Youth Choir for children and young people with disabilities and their siblings, who also perform at our concerts.
