Mission Statement
We are a team of young professionals and students and act as a platform for first time fundraisers to raise awareness and funds through the things they love such as dance, singing, music and fitness. We aim to provide a support fund for medical and educational staff, in the hope that we can make a difference by aiding in the purchase of tools and equipment so the staff can better serve the patients and students respectively. The team behind the foundation have done a fantastic job so far since establishing in December 2013 raising more than £64,000 for a number of causes including Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Help for Heroes and Delete Blood Cancer. We are now focusing on growing the organisation worldwide having completed projects in UK, US, China, Peru, India and Tanzania. The donations primarily are used to buy Fabian machines, a piece of equipment which is used to make it easier for babies to breathe so that they can relax and sleep without difficulty during their treatment. Majority of the patients at Great Ormond Street are under the age of 2, some of whom have been admitted there since birth. Occasionally older children with chronic health conditions have been readmitted to the hospital. The continuous challenge is to meet the needs for expansion to provide the best care to its young patients. The children do not understand why they cannot go home and just want to run around and be happy, it is our duty to try and put a smile on these young faces and aid the medical team involved to carry on doing their excellent work. We encourage volunteers to identify other areas where we can help and have further developed relationships with The Anthony Nolan Trust, Help for Heroes, Little Havens Hospice for Children and schools in Punjab, India. I am proud to announce our academy has been successfully running since June 2016 whereby we have supported 208 children funding tuition fees for exams and providing basic equipment in books, pencils and erasers. The academy was set up to provide children with educational support having lost family members due to the ongoing drug issue in Punjab and some are still facing the tragic backlash of 1984. In 2014 stem cell donor drives were held across the UK raising more than £7,000 for Delete Blood Cancer and getting more than 550 people signed up to the stem cell donor database. The Happy to Help team predominantly made up of dancers have continued to perform at the highest level, whilst aiding in our mission to raise awareness completing the Spartan Run trifecta, the British 10km and Tough Mudder. Our incredible team have taken on even physical challenges worldwide trekking the Great Wall or Chine, Machu Picchu and Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Help for Heroes and Aids Orphans collectively raising £7,690.79. We would like to make as many young adults, professionals and organisations aware of Happy to Help, and believe that we as a community worldwide can increase the exposure to the fund and our team primarily to inspire others to join in, or to donate and support.
About This Cause
We aim to provide a support fund for medical and educational staff, in the hope that we can make a difference by aiding in the purchase of tools and equipment so the staff can better serve the patients and students respectively. In order to carry out our purpose we have assembled a trustee team which is made up of 4 trustees each with a specific role and unique set of skills. Gurpal Singh Hunjan – Founder’s role is to identify and provide a platform for those seeking to raise awareness through the things they love ensuring all funds raised are donated 100% to the causes we support remaining transparent to donors from concept to delivery of a project. We believe there are no set rules on how to raise funds, it can be trekking through mountains, playing sports or singing. It can also be as simple as picking up the phone and having a chat with someone so they know they are not alone. Being born with a hole in the heart and cared for until the age of 18 Gurpal is eternally thankful to those who have helped him along his way. Happy to Help is a step in the direction to not only help those providing a service but to be the support to those who find themselves feeling alone in truly heart breaking circumstances. Simran Kaur Khakha – Mental Health Consultant. Being experienced and trained in working as a befriender at a sanctuary home for suicide prevention, her role at Happy to Help is to provide support to those who need, or know someone who needs, counselling. She is also qualified in British Sign Language Level 1 and will be working towards level 2 in accordance with volunteering as an online community moderator for NDCS, a platform for families of / professionals working with children with deafness. Dipak Shah – Project Management Consultant. With over 20 years working as engineer delivering projects across the world of varying types his role at Happy to Help is to help build projects from concept to implementation where targets and goals set are realistic and achievable. By identifying risks associated with a project at concept stage means our delivery is smooth and results maximised. Itvinder Singh Hayre - Music and Arts Consultants role at Happy to Help is to provide a platform to artists in the singing, music and fine art world for them to share their work in galleries and stages to not only raise awareness of their work but to raise awareness for the causes they would like to support. Events have been successfully for Youtube personality and author Humble the Poet during his London tour, author Rupi Kaur during the Milk and Honey Book Launch alongside Kirat Kaur and Kay Ray and also artists Hatecopy and Babu during their Europe tour. Bringing together all of the above makes for a diverse team with a common interest, by combining our networks its means we maximise our audience and this is how we are able to bring together so many volunteers and raise the funds we have thus far. When building projects, we try and identify areas where we can help first hand. For example, trustee Gurpal was born with a hole in his heart and cared for by Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children from the age of 6 month up until 18 years of age. During this time, his family have built a very strong relationship with the hospital and its staff where conversations happen freely and staff members highlight areas where assistance is needed. The play workers on the wards provide us with a wish list every year and we optimise donations keeping an eye for sales on Amazon for example and make purchases first hand to avoid any admin or delivery charges. We have a similar arrangement with Little Havens Hospice for Children where again trustee Gurpal’s nephew was cared for during his final days at the tender age of 6. Having visited the hospice the staff gave us a full tour of the grounds and highlighted items which will be of significant use. An example of this is a tandem bicycle which is compatible with wheelchairs so during the summer parents can take their child out onto the grounds for a ride and enjoy being in the outdoors. We have also identified special swings which allow for wheelchairs to be locked in so a child can play outside. As well as building relationships with organisations to identify areas where we can help the criteria we look at is how can we maximise donations received. With zero admin fees and zero overhead we pride ourselves on ensuring donations do not go toward any travel costs for trustees to reach location for example. Having heritage in India as trustees we regularly travel back home to visit family and the sponsorship we have set for students is in a village very close by to our home so we are able to deliver one hundred percent of the donations to its location and purchase uniforms and stationary first hand and also deliver first hand. To summarise our criteria to identify projects is receiving information first hand from those we want to aid and secondly identifying where there is opportunity to help from our daily lives and annual holidays to not only have a break but do some good while away. We decide which projects to carry out overseas by tying these in with our regular travels. With majority of the trustee team having family in India we travel back and forth annually and have places to stay so we are able to maximise the funds raised and donate them first hand. If we are setting up projects in other countries we treat them as a holiday so the donations raised are directed to the causes and not for our travels. In order to raise funds over the years as a team of trustees we have completed a number of challenges including trekking across the Great Wall of China and trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru. We have also as a team completed a number of run and obstacle courses including the British 10km Run in London and the Spartan trifecta obstacle course runs. As well as physical challenges we have organised events such as the Humble the Poet London tour, the Rupi Kaur Milk and Honey book launch and also put on a number of art exhibitions for artists including Jatinder Durhailay and Amandeep Singh Inkquisitive Illustrations. At each of these events we give university dance teams, singers and musicians a platform to showcase their talents. These are ticketed events whereby profits made are donated to our charity and we the delegate funds to the causes we support. We will continue fundraising by the means highlighted above and in addition collaborate with other charities to put on even bigger events. We have utilised matched giving at our work places receiving donations from Bloomberg and Ameresco UK. Our plan once registered is to continue bidding for company supports identifying where we utilise company charity days and hold donor drives for example and run as even larger teams. With regards to the volunteers we select overseas these are people who all live in the local areas already. As tasks are simple, collecting and delivering materials for example, risks are minimal but we ensure all drivers are licensed and familiar with the routes. When carrying out a challenge overseas we work with the company Charity Challenge who make all travel, living and eating arrangements which we fund personally and therefore allows for all funds raised to be delegated accordingly via a justgiving page so donations are kept separate. We feel this company minimises risk by providing experienced and friendly guides who know the routes and local people very well and are also first aid trained. We encourage volunteers to get into a routine of doing exercise prior to embarking on treks but ultimately encourage people of all fitness levels to get involved and we complete as a team.
