Mission Statement
Safe Passage is a strategic legal organisation, working to ensure refugees seeking asylum have access to safe and legal routes to protection and a dignified life. We do this by championing refugees’ rights to legal safe passage through strategic legal work, advocacy, capacity building, and community organising.
About This Cause
Conflict and persecution have forced over 25 million people worldwide to flee their homes, leading to the largest refugee crisis in decades. Half of these refugees are children and more than ever before are unaccompanied, having lost family members along the way or been forced to flee alone. On their journey to reach a place of safety, these children are often vulnerable to trafficking and subject to violence and abuse. Many are forced to sleep rough or live in desperately inadequate accommodation. The scandal is that many of these children have a legal right to travel safely to a place of sanctuary, whether it’s to be reunited with family or to be protected from harm because of their extreme vulnerability. Safe Passage grew out of the urgent need for child refugees to access their right to reach a place of safety. From the initial aim of helping children in Calais to reach the UK at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015, Safe Passage now has teams in Greece, France and the UK working to open and strengthen safe and legal routes to protection for refugee children, then supporting their first steps to rebuilding their lives. While other organisations provide aid during the journey or support integration after arrival, we reduce long-term disadvantage by helping vulnerable children reunite with relatives in the UK who can support them, ensuring the best outcomes for them and their families. We also campaign to build public and political support for safe and legal routes for refugees, ensuring that many more children and families can benefit. We have changed government policy, won ground-breaking legal cases and reunited hundreds of families in conjunction with external legal partners. Since we started work in 2015, more than 2,000 children have travelled to safety through routes we have helped to open.
