Mission Statement

We are Brixton's own orchestra - a product of local talent and the unique blend of creative energy and cultural diversity which characterises the area. We exist to provide free live music experiences for a wide range of communities in Brixton and beyond, and paid performance opportunities for young professional musicians. We have four aims: - to reach new audiences with live orchestral music by presenting it in new ways and places; - to provide a performance and training platform for musicians residing in Brixton and South London; - to innovate new orchestral experiences through diverse collaborations; - to embed in our community and be an orchestra first and foremost of and for Brixton.

About This Cause

Since 2018, Brixton Chamber Orchestra has been a registered charity (1181169) which exists to provide free live music experiences for a wide range of communities in Brixton and beyond, and paid performance opportunities for young professional musicians. BCO is made up of a versatile group of instrumentalists which provides thrilling live orchestral experiences spanning all genres of music, encouraging social cohesion and breaking down barriers between people through a shared passion for live music. We champion orchestral music, presenting it to new audiences in unexpected venues. We revel in innovative collaborations with all sorts of artists and genres - Grime to Gospel, Disco to Drum and Bass, Classical to Jazz, and everything in between. We appear all over Brixton - in the market, pubs, clubs, parks, churches & community centres. Sometimes we perform symphonies as a full 30-piece orchestra. Twice a year, we tour Lambeth's housing estates, performing eclectic programmes to hundreds from the local community. This Summer and Christmas Estates tour has become our flagship project and reaches upwards of 2000 people a year in Lambeth, many of whom would not get the opportunity to experience a live orchestra otherwise. Our research shows that 10% of our audience has never experienced a live orchestra until they see us perform, often on their doorsteps. We aim to inspire generations old and and new and bring communities closer together. We want to dispel myths about classical music and revel in celebration of all music and all people. The Estates Tour is just one example of our community work, but putting on a 25-piece orchestra across 12 locations comes with a cost of nearly £30k. We have been lucky enough to successfully apply for ACE funding and have developed ongoing relationships with local sponsors such as Brixton Brewery, but they can only stretch so far. Now, more than ever before, with inflation rising and global politics effecting peoples lives, fundraising has become much harder. For every penny donated, we put everything back into BCO and our core aims as a charitable organisation. We hope you can support us to continue to bring joy and music to the community.
