Mission Statement
CareDogs wants a future in which older people feel less isolated and lonely, thanks to the companionship of dogs and better community connections. Dog companionship can be life-changing for over-55s, helping to combat loneliness and isolation, and support wellbeing. Dog ownership is not possible for everyone, which is why we provide a local befriending scheme which pairs up volunteers and their dogs with older people in their area, to connect over a walk, chat or cup of tea.
About This Cause
CareDogs is currently a completely volunteer-run organisation that helps older people who are 55+ benefit from being able to access our befriending service to find companionship (from both a human and dog volunteer) and develop social connections in their local area. This reduces feelings of isolation and improves mental wellbeing. Our focus on taking a dog for a walk for those who are physically able to also improves physical health and wellbeing. Each of our beneficiaries is paired with a dog and its owner on a weekly basis. The average visit/meet is 1.5 hours and these take place 48 weeks of the year. Volunteers also regularly engage with participants over the phone (averaging 16 hours per year per participant). The intention is to develop long-standing pairings which bring emotional and physical benefits to all parties.
