About This Cause
1. W4 Youth - Who we are W4 Youth (Reg No 1195368) is a youth movement dedicated to integrating young people into society through open access to cultural & sporting activities. We believe inclusivity is hugely important in providing new and diverse role models and perspectives for young people. These influential new perspectives can positively influence our young generation in promoting social mobility, increasing cross-cultural understanding and fostering social cohesion - so we welcome children and young people from all social and ethnic backgrounds – working with an inclusive range of 11 – 19-year-olds - with many of our beneficiaries coming from very underprivileged and often BAME backgrounds. We improve the health, well-being and social cohesion of these young people by engaging them in the sports they love, cool and contemporary singing and dance activities, and social time with their peers, and we also offer guidance and support to those who need it. By giving our young generation activities that are engaging enough for them to want to go and take part in, we bring a range of positive impacts to our children and the wider community – these include: • Fostering cross-cultural cohesion and understanding – through diverse social and ethnic inclusion • Improving physical and mental health – our activities increase confidence and reduce social isolation • Reducing anti-social activity and violence – by diverting young people into healthy activities and role models 2. Our Youth Activity Roster We give young people more than simply ‘a place to go and something to do’. Our community takes ownership and gets involved in our organisation and all of our activities – welcoming all who come along - working together with us to keep children healthy, engaged and, most importantly, safe. Our activities offer something for everyone, and include: • Football - Football is at the heart of W4 Youth. Over the years W4 Youth Rangers has had league teams in the Middlesex and Harrow Youth Football Leagues. Football at W4 Youth is always very popular, and we are always looking for young players to join our teams. • Street Dance & Musical Theatre - Since we started, these classes, led by dance and theatre coaches from the UK award-winning ‘Ghost Dance’ troupe, have been a fantastic and popular outlet for expression and creativity. • Sports Coaching - From sports training, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and many other sports our coaches are always ready to do something new with the young people of W4 Youth - and this year we plan to add Boxercise! • Youth Support Work - Counselling & support are always on hand for our members who need a bit of guidance or a helping hand on a range of issues including health, well-being, career guidance or social support. 3. Our Impact and Reach – 2010 – 2024 We are delighted to say thousands of children and young people have benefitted from our sports, arts and recreation sessions since we started our movement, and our current membership has burgeoned to over 400 children. We are incredibly lucky to include some wonderful supporters and patrons as part of our community ‘family’ – with Ant and Dec having been our charity Patrons for many years. Much of our in-kind support comes in through our network of friends, however, we cannot do the work we do without sustainable funding. Critically, this means securing trusted grant partners to come with us on our journey to give young people the better future that positive choices create. 4. Need Statement After her son was tragically shot in the face one afternoon after school, Sally Chacatté, Founder and Chair created W4 Youth to give the young people in the area somewhere safe to go and something good to do 7 days a week. The case is already clear that physical activity has a positive impact on tackling anti-social behaviour amongst young people within the United Kingdom (Sandford et al, 2008). Moreover, a recent youth and policy research paper (Naomi Thompson and David Woodge, 2020) highlights youth clubs as the most needed provision by young people, supporting open access youth work as the most important provision to change young people’s life direction for the better. Critically, open access and diverse inclusion are also key drivers for improving community cohesion and understanding and encouraging more social mixing improves relations between groups. (LSE, 2017) Locally, unemployment is the fourth highest in London in Ealing with key stage 4 points for Southfield where W4 Youth is based, being the lowest in the Ealing ward. Additionally, many young people at W4 Youth are from an ethnic minority background, with a significant number on behavioural reports at school, and some excluded totally. With 85% of children in Young Offender Institutions having been excluded (Children’s Commissioner, 2019) and no youth provision in Acton W4, these children would be left abandoned; potentially starting their young lives along a path of anti-social behaviour or crime, impacting on their academic performance and potentially their future employment prospects. 5. Activities / Timetable Our activities take place 4 evenings a week - Tuesday through Friday. We provide up to 8 coaches from Ghost Dance and Lullah Sports as well as other youth workers and volunteers per night who conduct different classes and sessions with our groups. Tuesday - Friday – inside the local church hall • Musical Theatre & Street Dance – 1 hour – for young people to share their skills and learn about dancing, drama and singing for pleasure or as a vocational pursuit – with regular opportunities to perform at various events. Tuesday - Friday 5 – 7 pm– inside and outside the W4 Youth Hub (using the exterior hard court) • Youth Support Work – 2 hours - for young people to come along and share traditional youth club activities including table tennis, pool, table football and board games and share their concerns and challenges with our youth workers and therapists. Tuesday - Friday– 5 – 7 pm – with W4 Youth in the Park - using the football fields and volleyball court. • Girls and Boys Football training & general fitness training/ Basketball / Boxercise - for young people at any level/gender – incredibly popular with our young community! 6. Outcomes • Outcome 1 – Reduced anti-social behaviour and crime (longer-term impact of decreased unemployment) • Outcome 2 – Improved physical and mental health, self-esteem and general wellbeing • Outcome 3 – Increased social cohesion, cross-cultural understanding and reduced social isolation 7. Future plans W4 Youth is part of the Ealing Consortium that includes Ealing Council, Brentford FC CST and The Football Foundation to bid for and eventually manage a PlayZone in the park in which we are based, as part of The Football Foundation PlayZones project. Also we have a joint venture with Ealing Council to build a Community Centre in the park in which we are based where the Council will lease W4 Youth the land for a peppercorn rent and we will raise the funds to build the Centre and pay for the running costs into the future. We have finished the design and will be applying for planning permission jointly with Ealing Council soon as the first stage of the project. We are partnered with Rocks Lane Sports Trust, the charitable arm of Rocks Lane that has multi-sport activity centres in Chiswick, Barnes and Fulham (Home - Rocks Lane) and they are supporting us with the new PlayZones and Community Centre projects. We have numerous pro-bono professional services organisations including planners, architects, structural engineers and project managers amongst others who are all supporting us in the Community Centre project. We are currently looking for companies and individuals to partner us and become benefactors to fund building the new W4 Youth & Community Centre.
