Mission Statement

Uniting the business world with diverse talent.

About This Cause

Founded in October 2019, Radical is the UK’s only non-profit recruitment consultancy working exclusively with diverse people (aka: Radicals) who are under-represented in the labour market. Our Radicals are people who have a ‘protected characteristic’ under the law and/or who have diverse life experiences which have made it tough to enter the world of work or challenging to return after a period of absence. This includes people who have experience of homelessness, contact with the care and criminal justice system, domestic violence and abuse, addiction, modern day slavery … the list goes on. The key difference between Radical and other non profits with an employment remit is that we apply a commercial approach to recruitment which means we don’t sling ‘mud’ at walls and hope some of it ‘sticks’. Our Radicals are thoroughly vetted during the onboarding process and are provides with a tailored programme of support to equip them with the skills, tools and most importantly, the confidence to apply for and win jobs on their own merit. In short, there is no charity involved because our Radicals are supported to compete on an even footing in open recruitment processes against candidates from the mainstream which means they get the job because they are the best candidate at the end of the recruitment process. We also insist that our Radicals aspire and secure jobs that make good use of their skills and experience, that offer good pay for meaningful work and real opportunities to progress in their chosen careers. This is in stark contrast to the opportunities that most of our third-sector counterparts who tend to broker opportunities to apply for jobs that the British public tend not to want – like fruit picking and warehousing. In recent months we’ve placed Radical in a range of sectors and disciplines including web design, billing and finance, administration, enforcement, legal, IT, human resources, project management, project management and care to name just a few. Our team is comprised of Radical people who are lived experience experts. They are also people who understand the ‘mechanics’ of recruitment and have an appreciation of the pace at which the corporate world moves because they were working in the private sector before they joined our ranks! There are circa 35,000 recruitment agencies trading in the UK which remain largely inaccessible to Radical people. Unlike our mainstream counterparts, our organisation was built by and for Radical people, so we understand the challenges that our Radicals face when attempting to access the labour market. Because of this, we offer a ‘wrap-around’ support service (pre- and post-placement) for our Radicals and partners. This approach ensures that everyone is supported when they need it and that our Radicals and employers are supported to navigating any hurdles that crop up. Our in-work sustainability rate has remained above 90% (at 6 months) as a result. Our partners also get the added benefit of ‘doing good’ by transforming the lives of people that mainstream recruiters often overlook with the added benefit of brand alignment with the UK’s only not for profit recruiter. We also provide our partners with a suite of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Social Value and Diversity solutions to help them meet their commitments. This includes access to corporate volunteering opportunities, the Radical Anti-Bias Changemaker Challenge, trauma and mental health informed leadership training, diversity consultancy services, sponsorship opportunities, and diversity themed events including ‘Lunch and Learns’, inspirational talks and themed ‘Fireside Chats’. These solutions are never ‘off the shelf’ and we work hard to ensure what we delivered is tailored to the businesses we partner with. We dislike diversity ‘snake oil’ sellers. • 450+ Radicals from the most diverse backgrounds, who experience intersecting disadvantage and significant barriers placed into meaningful and paid work. • Salaries negotiated from London Living Wage to £90,000. • Less than 2% re-offending rate amongst Radicals with a conviction. • 85 rough sleeper Radicals with no recourse to public funds supported to come off the streets, secure permanent employment and move into stable accommodation. • 82% in-work sustainability rate for our most vulnerable Radicals, our rough sleeper Radicals placed in into work in the height of the pandemic. • 90% in-work sustainability rate at six months for all other Radicals. We think these numbers speak for themselves. Our human-centric pre-work and in-work support model is effective for a broad range of Radical people who face intersecting disadvantage. And, by applying a commercial but values-led approach to recruitment, we place Radicals into jobs that not only align with their career aspirations but make use of their many skills and natural talents too. Except for a handful of DWP and local authority funded projects supporting Radicals who are furthest from the labour market, we are self-funding. What this means is that we charge the partners we work alongside for the services they use. We do this by securing recruitment preferred supplier status or issuing terms of business, both of which enable us to invoice a success fee on placement. For partners who want to buy ‘off the shelf’ services, like our training products or who want to sponsor a Radical event like an employability workshop, we have a fixed schedule of fees. For clients who want to bundle together a number of Radical solutions, including retained recruitment projects, we offer an annual subscription service. We partner with Radical businesses who know that ‘doing good’ and driving business success aren’t mutually exclusive. Our partners can have their cake and eat it too! Over the past three and a half years, we’ve worked with some of the biggest and the best brands including Warner Media, Mitie, Sage, YMU Group, Leathwaite, Wahaca, KLH Sustainability, Lendlease, Compass Group, Marston Holdings and Reward Gateway to name a few. We’ve also partnered with third and public sector organisations like Forward Trust, CALM, Riverside Housing and the Civil Service. We are pretty picky about who we partner with and will only team up with businesses who have an authentic commitment to diversity and can prove that they share our values. Put simply, we refuse to be any big corporates ‘Bid Candy’! • kirsty@radicalrecruit.co.uk OR emma@radicalrecruit.co.uk
