Mission Statement
Goals 4 Girls exists to support & raise the aspirations of girls & young women aged 11-16, within the UK’s most marginalised communities. We are a female-led football & social prescribing organisation which delivers programmes designed by the girls for the girls in our community. We are driven by the desire to break down barriers in accessing football through FA level football coaching & mentorship in education & career development. Goals 4 Girls encourages girls & young women to lead more active & healthier lives.
About This Cause
Goals 4 Girls was founded by ex-Manchester City women’s semi-professional footballer Francesca Brown in April 2011. The company initially delivered sessions at a small youth centre in the local community of Canning Town, East London to a small group of disadvantaged young women. The initial aim was to offer girls-only football development training sessions as a tool to get girls off the street in the hope of increasing their activity and engagement in sports. As the evening sessions developed, Francesca grew concerned for the girls’ well-being after overhearing some of their conversations regarding insecurities around body image, social media, relationships, confidence and barriers to accessing sports. Francesca knew it was important to build on these conversations and encourage young women to make their voices heard so conducted a ‘round table discussion’ around what the girls would like to access within their local community. “The boys get everything, and we get nothing. What are you going to do about it?” This imbalance needed redressing, so they spent hours brainstorming possible services and solutions. Out of this discussion, Goals 4 Girls was formed and the rest as they say is history. Our approach is built around long term intervention that builds sustainable pathways within sports and education, by providing long lasting impact and support way beyond the field. We aspire to break down social, cultural and economic barriers to football so that young women and girls can dream with unlimited beliefs. Our Football Coaches and therapeutic sports mentors have a deep personal understanding & connection with the communities our young women and girls live in. By combining their own lived experiences and the highest level of coaching, therapeutic training and qualifications, our culturally sensitive staff bridge the gap for young women and girls. We operate in areas with high levels of deprivation in London, providing opportunities & long-term solutions for sustainable change. Goals 4 Girls provides flexible football & well-being programmes designed around the school timetable and we work closely with the school pastoral team to ensure that the needs of the participants are met. This consists a combination of group mentoring sessions, therapeutic intervention, pitch-based well-being activities and football sessions that are focused around our four pillars: 1. IDENTITY Exploring intersectionality, inequality, relationships (negative + positive), media pressures, sexism, period poverty, racism, poverty and womanhood. 2. CAREER DEVELOPMENT Exploring CV building, goal-setting, employment opportunities, communication and leadership skills, financial management, interview skills, and identifying and working with female role models. 3. MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Exploring body confidence, self-esteem, mental health, sports participation, well-being and healthy lifestyles. 4. SPORTS PARTICIPATION Unlocking the possibilities in every girl and young woman through the power of football, by providing intensive support and long-lasting impact way beyond the pitch.
