About This Cause

Loughborough is a market town in the UK East Midlands, first mentioned in the Domesday book of Norman England in 1086. Its market was established in 1221, and its industry grew from the eighteenth century, including the world-renowned Taylor’s bell foundry. Its university is ranked highly, and, with a current population of around 60,000, Loughborough remains a busy, thriving town. The Loughborough Male Voice Choir was established over 100 years ago, and, its current organisation, is approaching its 60th anniversary. The choir is forward-looking and inclusive, with a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. providing an accessible opportunity for men of all ages who wish to sing and who would like to develop their skills and abilities in a friendly, relaxed, informal environment, enriching their lives and that of the local and wider community. We are a non-auditioned choir of 40+ voices, and meet weekly throughout the year for 2 hours on Thursday evenings in Loughborough town centre, with a short summer break. We perform several concerts and other events throughout the year, including major Spring and Autumn Concerts, Christmas events, and concerts with other choirs and in other local venues, all with an element of charitable purpose. This charitable purpose has two aspects, one focussed within the choir, and the second a more external one. Within the choir, we continually work: • To reflect the wealth of evidence that participation in physical activities, in group activities, and in singing in particular, enhances physical and mental health and well-being. • To promote the fellowship of the choir to help men from across the whole community combat isolation, loneliness, a lack of purpose This means that we maintain an affordable subscription, supported by our own funds and some sponsorship for our members who may need some financial help. We take no personal expenses for any activity, all funds and donations are used to continue to maintain the choir and its activities. We have fund-raising activities through our members, which help support additional activities, such as trips within the UK, where we perform with other choirs, many of which are supporting their own local charities. Outside of the choir, we support a number of designated charities, especially those which are local to the area or have a special significance for any of our members. These have included national and local cancer support charities, local children’s hospice, homeless and outreach charities. We also perform for organisations to support their charity needs, including the local branch of the Lions Club International. In summary, then, we are an organisation that supports its members to stay with us and enjoy fellowship as well as singing and performance. We also reach outwards, supporting our community and worthwhile causes, both local and national. And other than professional fees paid to our Music Director and accompanist, we do this without personal financial gain.
